I am a theologically conservative Lutheran and a libertarian. Unfortunately, that seems to mean that I am a little "out of the box" when it comes to the theological and political quizzes here: quiz 3 pegged me as "Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan" (doesn't ring true to me) and a number of the questions in quiz 9 were difficult for me to answer (for a given question, sometimes I liked both answers and sometimes I liked neither).

The Sesame Street quiz called me "Bert," though, and I can believe that. On the other hand, my wife and I joke about me sometimes having "green fur" (i.e., being like Oscar the Grouch). Also, the Beatles quiz (I'm a big fan of the group) called me "Hey Jude" with "Eleanor Rigby" and "Here Comes the Sun" closely following; this rings true.

1.  Elmo
2.  Eleanor Rigby (At least it's not Yellow Submarine)

3.  Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan
4.  15% left brained, 85% right brained (15% is more than I expected! Yay!)
5.  Sexy, powerful and bold.  Oo La La!

6.  49%. Not bad for a left coaster who's never visited your fine state!
7.  Spider-Man.  Cool!

8.  Robert Frost.  Thank goodness, a poet I know!  Dang.  Now I have one of his poems ringing in my head!
9.  Because numbers aren't my thing (see #4), I'll just summarize and say I'm mostly conservative.

10.  Charity, Love, Friendship, Peace, Courage, Faith.  In that order.

Well, phoey.  Now I need to rush or I'll be late for work!  Have a great morning, Kathy!

I am:

Ernie: Playful and childlike, you are everyone's favorite friend - even if your goofy antics get annoying at times. You are usually feeling: Amused - you are very easily entertained. You are famous for: Always making people smile. From your silly songs to your wild pranks, you keep things fun.How you life your life: With ease. Life is only difficult when your friends won't play with you!

Twist and Shout: Copying other people doesn't bother you, especially when you know you can be better than the original. Life is fun for you, and seriousness is unwelcome. You're life is filled with rambunctious friends and risky behavior.(I don't think I agree too much with this one. I'm not one for risky behavior.)

Charismatic/Pentecostal: You are a charismatic or pentecostal believer. You believe in the primacy of spiritual gifts and the importance of renewal of the body of Christ. You are likely to be suspicious of or even hostile to older non-charismatic churches and revival is high on your list of priorities. You are a firm believer that God's Spirit is as active today as in biblical times and you are likely to devote less time to academic study of the Bible and theology.(I am, in fact, Pentecostal: I attend an Assemblies of God church. The only part with which I disagree is that I love studying the Bible in depth, and our pastor encourages it weekly.)

55% left-brained, and 45% right-brained: The left side of your brain controls verbal ability, attention to detail, and reasoning.Left brained people are good at communication and persuading others. If you're left brained, you are likely good at math and logic.Your left brain prefers dogs, reading, and quiet. The right side of your brain is all about creativity and flexibility.Daring and intuitive, right brained people see the world in their unique way.If you're right brained, you likely have a talent for creative writing and art.Your right brain prefers day dreaming, philosophy, and sports.

I am... Impressed with this next quiz considering all I had to do was click on a picture: You are pure, moral, and adaptable. You tend to blend into your surroundings.Shy on the outside, you're outspoken to your friends. You believe that you live a virtuous life...And you tend to judge others with a harsh eye.As a result, people tend to crave your approval. (Not quite sure about that last part, but maybe I'm not that objective...)

North Carolinian - 42%: Congratulations! You already know a lot about the great state of North Carolina, and you are interested in learning more through experience! You can appreciate the rich opportunities NC has to offer from Murphy to Manteo, and all in between! (I have never been to NC, although I do have a famous connection: Don Knotts is a relation to me by marriage... His grandfather is my great, great grandfather. He was from Morgantown, I think...)

Spider-Man (Spider-Woman?): You are intelligent, witty, a bit geeky and have great power and responsibility.

Emily Dickinson: You are a pioneer. You have been called to a vocation. You are the art and the art is you. You do not stop for anything. Sacrifice is made it its name. You are truly an artist unbound. (I'm an Emily Dickinson fan, incidentally.)

Liberal: Overall: 35% Conservative, 65% Liberal;Social Issues: 50% Conservative, 50% Liberal; Personal Responsibility: 50% Conservative, 50% Liberal;Fiscal Issues: 0% Conservative, 100% Liberal;Ethics: 50% Conservative, 50% Liberal;Defense and Crime: 25% Conservative, 75% Liberal

Faith: You are Faith. Faith is the belief in better things, in spite of the cynicism and doubt that swirls around us. Faith gives us strength; it inpsires us to move forward and follow our hearts. "Faith tells us what the senses do not."

What a fun series of quizzes! Thank you for posting these, Kathy - I had a great time! :o)

Jam 137,

I ID with a lot of what you say. These surveys are too "in the box". I often want a different answer. I think particularly in political and faith surveys that there is far too much boxiness. The people writing them automatically think they know what conservative and liberal IS for instance and then box out what they can't see.

jam137
July 18, 2007 at 10:42am

recon77: I think that what sometimes is considered "conservative" or "liberal" nowadays is probably nearly the opposite of what constituted those categories 100, 50 or even 10 years ago. Maybe the definitions get more slippery during times of war when much is changing politically, and maybe part of the problem is due to people using these words pejoratively.

As for Beatles songs...after I took the quiz and wrote my comment here, I thought about how I sometimes wish I were a little more like "Yellow Submarine." Make of that what you will. :-)

C'mon, guys!  Don't take these things so seriously!  Just have fun with them.  They are easily manipulated, which can make the results even more fun.  They aren't scientific polls, you know.  Recon, I would have loved it if you were Wonder Woman!  Smile!!!

My uncle is a pastor and psychiatrist. I can just imagine him saying to a client, "Well, Mr. Smith, I think the problem is that you think you're a Grover, but you're actually a Telly. I think we've made a lot of progress today." What a different world this would be if real psychology/psychiatry were muppet-based, huh? hehe

Kristin, what a funny scene you have painted in my brain!  I would like to be diagnosed as Mr. Snuffleupagus.  Is he still on Sesame Street?  I loved that wooly mammoth!  Elmo is really cute, but actually being able to say 'I'm Mr. Snuffleupagus' would be awesome!

Ha ha! go figure! I came out 100% Catholic :D
supposedly I am 86% Neo-Orthodox... what does that mean?
jam137
July 18, 2007 at 2:05pm

ali, in the context of the quiz, I am not sure what "Neo-orthodox" is supposed to mean. Here's a Wikipedia article on the subject, though. Does anything there strike you as related to how you answered certain questions?

I think that I came out about 60% "Roman Catholic" and probably pretty high on "Fundamentalist" and "Reformed Evangelical" (I don't remember the exact percentages for those). I was pretty low on "Neo-orthodox," "Modern Liberal" and "Emergent/Postmodern."

I retook the theological quiz. Maybe my answers shifted slightly in terms of degree, but I also think that I had misremembered some of the percentages. I am supposedly as much "Neo-orthodox" as I am "Fundamentalist" and "Roman Catholic"; what an odd combination! Here's how I scored:

Sue, that's great! :-) I took the quiz a few times, and I found that slight changes to my answers varied the theologian in my top spot. Anselm, Barth, Calvin and Luther were at or near the top, Augustine and Edwards were significantly above 50%, while Finney, Moltmann, Schleiermacher and Tillich were below 50%.
