11:40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?" This is an interesting quote to consider. "If you would believe, you would see the glory of God." St Paul calls faith "the evidence of things unseen." To many people, particularly non-believers, this means we're making the whole thing up. I experienced an intense period of doubt several years ago, in which I thought that very thing. And yet, I saw people whom I respected very much, who clearly believed and were not "making it up." As I struggled with my unbelief, I realized that my world seemed quite drab. Sure, I felt proud for awhile about the sensible choice I had made to abandon what seemed to me a fantasy, but why wasn't I happier with that sensible choice? Well, as it turned out, even though I had abandoned God for a time, He had not abandoned me. Soon, I began to pray again, and my prayers went something like this: "I believe, Lord. Help my unbelief!" And as I began to find that belief, I found that the color came back into my world. In a very real sense, I began to see the "glory of God." So I think I can identify with the quote above in a personal way. I don't feel that I'm looking through rose-colored glasses, though. The prayer of "help my unbelief" is never far from my lips. But I continue to believe, and I continue to see the glory of God.
