And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
Mark Twain once wrote, 'Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.' Forgiving an enemy who relentlessly persecutes you is humanly impossible. Yet, we are called to do this very thing if we want to be followers of Christ. This 'doing good' to those who do bad in return is absurd... for those who do not know Christ. But, in Christ victory is possible. In Christ, we can say 'forgive them father for they do not know what they do.' In Christ, we can follow the footprints of His path and carefully place our feet, one by one, along the imprint of each of His. God's credit comes only in believing in His Son and following closely. I pray that I will have the courage to do this very thing and the faith to rely on His Holy Grace to lead me there. Humanly impossible? Yes. Possible in Christ? Most assuredly. |
