Leaving The Doctrine Of Christ?

I wonder what the Apostle Paul meant when he wrote...

6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,


because he surely does not mean we should negate Christs teachings and return to our former ways.

Please share with me your ideas.

To me, Paul is not telling us to abandon the teachings of Christ, but what he is saying is that we need to grow up. You see, we've already learned the basic principles of Christ, now we need to become mature children, and not getting stuck on what we first learned as baby Christians, and that was repenting for our sins. I hope I am making sense. I read this scripture from the New Living Translation to give myself understanding before writing my comment. The King James is like reading Shakespeare. :)

Jonathan, is that the KJV you quoted? I clicked on the link and came up with this wording:

"Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity..."

It seems Paul (the probable writer of Hebrews) is exhorting us to move on to maturity, like adamherring said, rather than be "spiritually lazy" and go no further than the elementary teachings.
