| Singing while suffering |
|
| |
Paul and Silas had been thrown into prison after having been falsely accused and subsequently harassed and tortured. (Their crime: freeing a young girl from an oppressing spirit). While chained/locked up, did they wallow in self-pity, doubt, or fear? Did they call down curses on their accusers or condemn their actions openly in righteous anger? Did they question God or complain about their unbelievably bad fortune?
16:25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.
As it turns out, no! They were praying and singing God’s praises in the midst of their suffering and injustice!! Not only did they accept their lot, but they embraced it!!
And whether they realized it at the time or not, God had a purpose for their predicament. Non-believers were paying close attention to them! No doubt, the innocent missionaries would have been justified in protesting their treatment, decrying the injustices they’d suffered, or even lamenting aloud God’s apparent absence on the scene.
But no, they did none of these. Instead, they embraced God’s purposes, which were certainly beyond their understanding. What kind of witness did this result in, I wonder? Seems to me a very powerful one!
Do we realize that others are watching when we suffer? Are we aware of the amazing opportunity our suffering affords us, to witness for our Lord? Can we comprehend the incredible power of this witness?
(Right now I am determined to sing. I just hope someone will be listening...) |

I remember when I faced injustices at my job. I was so frustrated, but I just trust God, and He showed me how to be a better teacher. |

It is through our suffering that God is manifested. That is when He shows up to let us know and unbelievers that He is real. Praise Him in the good times and especially the bad..

I wasn't suffering terribly but during my time at my prior office but on the days when I felt so out sorts, I tried very hard to sing praises at my desk and my coworkers talked about the humming from my desk often. I have one special girl I have and had been praying for, Megan. Her mom died when Megan was 13. She is now 24. She told me she didn't believe in God. Her maternal grandfather was a preacher. Life was difficult for her after her dad remarried and she suffered at the hands of a proverbial wicked stepmom. It isn't the way they all are but hers was mean to her. She wrote this to me six months after working with her. She and I stay in touch now that I am gone from that office. She calls me her Richmond Mom. I wear that title proudly.I am sharing it because it speaks of a non-believer paying attention in her own words. Sent: Thursday, August 28, 2008 3:01 PM To: Juanita Hamlin Subject: You have changed a lot about me. I see the lord work thru you in many ways. I asked him to make the water go down in my yard and that I would leave it in his hands. I just called robbie and he said that he doesn’t see anything. It was about 10-12 feet into our yard and probably about 4 feet deep in the middle. You are opening my eyes….. Thank you! Megan |

Amen Mike!
It can really open a person's eyes seeing how people who are Christian's live and "sing" when they are suffering. It can be so easy to complain and go in your little bubble, but when you see that uplifting personality when they're struggling it can bring a whole new light to how we live. Me and my family pray that during our struggles that people saw that difference and "singing" in us. |

Great blog Mike...as usual. :-) For me, the wonderful thing learned from this account is the fact that it was God who lead them to Ephesus in the first place. Also notice that there is absolutely no self doubt, or any hint that they questioned whether they had "missed God: because the circumstances got negative" thing going on. I also remember that [in Greek] Paul always referred to himself a "the prisoner of the Lord" when in jail. For those who know that they belong to God in Christ, there are no secondary causes. No one is seen to have authority over such a person except God alone. What is truly impressive about Paul and Silas is not Paul and Silas, but what God did through Paul and Silas, and therefore what He can also do with the rest of us. If we are supposed to be impressed with Paul and Silas then they have something to boast about! If we are supposed to be impressed with what God can do through clay pots then we have some One to boast in, and also a strong hope that HE can achieve the same results if "we" have to go through similar circumstances! Many focus on what the "Devil" is doing, but these men looked right through whatever the Devil may have been doing and worshipped and praised the One who had considered them worthy to suffer for his Son's sake. The account is a living demonstration of how Paul walked out "power being made perfect in weakness." Many seem to make the mistake of being impressed with Paul, as if he did what he did in the flesh, and in his own strength; when all the time he told us things like "I speak of nothing except what Christ has accomplished through me" and "when God was pleased to reveal his Son in me." Somehow, we like to reduce the Christian life to what we can do so that we don't have to have a real and living relationship with God in the real Spirit of God. Everything is reduced to a doctrine, precept, or algorithm that's used to try and produce what only the Spirit can. Genuine faith looks at the circumstance and says "I don't know how but You are going to make this work for good and for your glory Father!" The new age type of faith is really a focus on our selves to produce something [e.g. faith] so that we can be in control of circumstances, other people, and ourselves. Genuine worship was demonstrated in this circumstance by the fact that they had no "Why is this happening?" types of reasoning going on. They were completely bowing before the goodness of God in their mind, will, and emotions and that fact gave rise to the prayers and hymns they offered and sang. If we reflect on our own experience we'll see that no one who is praying prayers like "Why is this happening to me God?" or "God please do something! The Devil has thrown me in prison!" ever ends up joyfully singing hymns to God. Blessings! Craig |

| Thank you, Mike and Laura! Now that is showing the LIGHT of our LORD, letting others (non-believers) know that we are GOD'S own and how HE works HIS perfect will and love in/on us even through rough and unjust times. Good message! |

| I love to sing, but sometimes, when I get really down, it is the last thing I feel like doing. I have to really put forth the effort to do it, and then I am always blessed. Singing praises to God is the best way to lift a gloomy spirit! |

| God is giving you important revelation Mike! It is not all about us, but the reason we suffer and are tested are not only for our own benefit but also as a witness to others. When I was a 19 year old youth pastor one of my young people who was 14 died of hodgkins disease. (That was back in the 80s before we had the cure) and that young man won more people to Christ through his sickness and death than he ever did while he was healthy. That taught me a valuable lesson in that God has His purposes and that as we suffer in grace we glorify God. I think of the Deacon Stephen as he was being stoned to death, that Saul of Tarsus was watching and don't you know that witness of Stephen must have prepared Paul for his encounter with Christ. Here we see, the Phillipian jailor asking "What must I do to be saved?" Don't you know Paul and Silas were witnessing witihout preaching? Our worship, our attitude, our choice not to complain is as powerful a witness as our words. |

Deb, when it's hard to praise may be when the praises are most meaningful. We are called to offer a "sacrifice of praise" (Heb 13:15) in those times. God bless you sister, we miss your daily fellowship. Craig, the thing I most admire about Paul is the extent to which he yielded himself to Christ. The man was a talented yielder! Todd....wow, do we realize, when we accept Christ, that we may be called to suffer for him? Also, I wonder sometimes if it seems like our degree of suffering increases proportionally with our level of maturity (ability to persevere)? The world would say this is unfair! Strong Christians deserve a good life! But God says, the stronger you are, the more in tune you are w/me and the less the suffering really hurts. Hmmm, just wondering... |

| :) Wow! Reminded me of when a hospital employee came to me and began to speak about how they'd all been watching my family while my brother was in ICU being a BEAR of a patient. I just remember being stunned that they'd have a good word to say about us 'coz we tend to get rather silly when we're sleep-deprived. I asked God about it later on and He said, "I get more glory when you are just being yourself rather than trying to be someone else." I guess that underlying JOY that comes from knowing Jesus just shines through -- even when you least expect it! :) God is soooo amazing! :) :) :) |

God is really teaching me this one! LOL!
On facebook the other day I had made this comment, "Becky Sutherland... is so excited! and I just can't hide it! I know I know I know and I think I like it!"... Funny how I know all my Christian MyChurch friends got it! They all said they "liked" my status comment. They knew I had found joy in my suffering, the Joy of Jesus Christ. They didn't even have to ask what was going on with me.
The only written comment to my status came from the one person I have been hoping to minister to, my long time agnostic/aethiest friend of 20 years. See we have agreed to disagree. She thought it was about a J-O-B. So I wrote back to her no but I had "Faith" it was coming. She knows my situation, and this is the perfect time for me to be singing about my sufferings to her on facebook. She is losing her job on Friday. I have been without for over a year. So as God continues to minister to my heart, I will try my best to sing out there. Hopefully she can see what God has got me through, and how I can still find peace and joy in all of it. What a great blog Mike. Thanks |

Especially from someone that you have taken on as a subject of prayer, as I had with Megan. Rebel had been praying longer for her friend, so she understands. By the way, The love that you bestow on your daughter is so beautiful to behold. My dad is still like that with all his daughters. I can tell you that we all had such beautiful love from him and it is a gift. My pastor has a daughter, maybe 13 years old and he said they sometimes ride in the car and he holds her hand. She is precious too. |

You know Mike, actually they were not singing while they were being beaten and then thrown in prison. They were in quite a lot of pain, bloody, clothes torn to shreds. Physically, emotionally, they were beaten down. But Paul and Silas found a place of prayer and the place of prayer became a place of praise as they once again turned their hearts toward Jesus. The outward man (physical, emotional) was still in pain but the inward man (spiritual) was rejoicing. Instead of the physical affecting the spiritual the spiritual effected the physical and shackles fell away and prison doors were opened.
Sometimes life beats us down. We are done wrong. Suffer unjustly. Life is not fair. We hurt. It takes a toll on us emotionally and often physically. But...
Do we dwell on what is wrong? Are we stuck in our pain? Or do we find the strength to turn our hearts toward Jesus in prayer and from prayer comes praise? Well, that sure sounds good but the reality is that that is not what we feel. When we allow feelings to dictate our prayer life we will spend a lot of time in prison. But when we choose to praise GOD in spite of our circumstances, pray in spite of our feelings, GOD has a way of taking that meant for evil or harm and using it to minister to others.
On this day Paul and Silas walked out of prison, a warden and his family got saved, GOD was greatly glorified. But this did not happen every time. Paul spent a lot of time in jail. But instead of focusing on where he was he was always concerned about the church and used the only tool he had to reach out to it, his writing. Those words penned centuries ago still minister to us today.
And there are times that our only consolation in the midst of our pain is that we refuse to let go of GOD. Joy (a fruit of the Spirit not an emotion) is always near to the believer who is near to GOD.
Job 6:10 (NIV) Then I would still have this consolation— my joy in unrelenting pain— that I had not denied the words of the Holy One.
Paul and Silas were worshipped GOD.

Maybe Paul and Silas sang Psalms 42 & 43, which repeat this refrain three times: Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalms 42:5, 11; 43:5 (NIV) |

| mike, there is a song I sing in church by Selah called I Bless Your Name and it is about Paul and Silas and the trials and temptations that we are going through....we will go through, just like Noah was still in the storm he was on top of the water and the Lord kept him safe. Jesus will keep us until the end and even though it is hard to praise when times get tough....keep on praising Him for he will bring you out into the sunshine...lol Patty |

Yes, we need to be reminded of this. Today the trend is to complain about the way you get treated and get compensation, but for us who follow the Lord that is not necessarily the way. Even if no human sees us the angels will rejoice when we bear our suffering like Jesus did and don't wallow in self-pity, which is the natural thing for us to do. |

"when we bear our suffering like Jesus did and don't wallow in self-pity, which is the natural thing for us to do." Amen Ase! Wallowing, feeling sorry for ourselves, is indeed the natural thing to do. But Jesus showed us the better way, to take our focus off ourselves and put it on someone else. I'm particularly struck by the fact that even as he hung on the cross, in agony and humiliation, rather than focus on his own pain, he had a deep sense of joy in the accomplishment of the Father's will and the redemption of those the Father loves. Good stuff, thanks for your comment! |
