| Love God - Part IV |
|
| |
The struggle to "stay" in Love with God, the way He commands, can be the greatest battle for many Christians. It is the purpose of this section of our study of Love to show, through the Word of God, things that we can do to help us Love God more. There are four parts to this section and this forth part deals with Believing and Receiving.
Jesus says, in Matthew 22:37
"And He replied to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (intellect)."
How can I Love someone this much? Do I "believe" this is even possible? Does anyone Love God this much? How much "do" I Love God? These are just a few questions that we may have in our mind when we read this fundamental scripture.
Anxious, to receive an answer from God to help me solve this struggle, I waited. I was still waiting for God to help me and it came to me that I should look at the verse from God and then at the questions I made up regarding it.
In my mind, I cut out the scripture and then the questions and laid them next to each other before me. I could feel the Spirit of God nudging me to look at the two for what they really are. Like a crime scene investigator, I began to analyze the two blocks of information for what each one was. What is each of these made of and what each says about itself. And something very real and very powerful began to be revealed.
On the left was the Word of God. And my understanding of it is that; it really is the Living Word of God. It's purpose is to communicate something too, that which He, Himself has created. This particular verse is a reply from Jesus (whom is also the Creator) to a group of religious leaders (whom are the created) concerning what was the most important commandment. A commandment is something God expects us to do. But that itself means that He must believe it is something that is possible for us to do.
Over on the right now, are the questions I made up. I have to apply the same test to both pieces of evidence, or information. And so, I look at what it too was made of and what it could say about itself. The first thing to realize is that it is from the thing that was created, in response to what it's creator has said. They are a list of questions, or doubts for what the scripture they refer to has said. What is interesting about them is that if we zoom out from the details just enough, we see that collectively they are a form of non-receipt of the information they refer to.
What I mean is, the questions express an inability to "receive" (accept, take to heart) the scripture they refer to. Why? If we zoom from this level of our focus out still further, we find that the reason we do not receive is because we do not "believe". Now I know there is a lot of "Believe-to-Receive" false teaching out there and I promise you, I am not talking about that kind of teaching. For one thing, I am talking about the original meaning of "believe", which means to Trust In and Rely Upon.
Trusting In and Relying Upon God is a form of believe that requires something very different from the New Age "believe and receive" teachings we see rising up everywhere today. The bible describes what is happening in the world today, my friends.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary
2 Thessalonians 2:11. for this cause-because "they received not the love of the truth." The best safeguard against error is "the love of the truth." shall send-Greek, "sends," or "is sending"; the "delusion" is already beginning. God judicially sends hardness of heart on those who have rejected the truth, and gives them up in righteous judgment to Satan's delusions (Isa 6:9, 10; Ro 1:24-26, 28). They first cast off the love of the truth, then God gives them up to Satan's delusions, then they settle down into "believing the lie": an awful climax (1Ki 22:22, 23; Eze 14:9; Job 12:16; Mt 24:5, 11; 1Ti 4:1). strong delusion-Greek, "the powerful working of error," answering to the energizing "working of Satan" (2Th 2:9).
Did you catch the order of how we are able to fall for a lie? "They first cast off the love of the truth, then God gives them up to Satan's delusions, then they settle down into "believing the lie".
And so I go back to the evidence with the truth now and I ask myself, DO I TRUST GOD, and DO I RELY ON GOD. This is what believing means. This is how you love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Do I love Him enough to trust what His Word says about me, to me, and on my behalf? Do I love Him enough to Rely upon Him and not myself or this world? These two questions must be resolved once and for all and the answer must be YES!
How can we love God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind? From Part I: Get rid of anything or anyone that has taken His place in your heart, the idols. From Part II: Get rid of the distractions, the stuff, the unnecessary, anything that's distracting us from thinking about God and hearing from Him. From Part III: Build up your prayer life with God and be thankful for everything He is doing or is allowing to happen in life. And finally, "believe". Amen?
I love you. |

| My new pastor (as in new to us because we changed churches) said something really true a few Sundays ago. He said sometimes people put faith in faith, when they are suppose to be putting faith in GOD. |

Hello, Lara. That is so true. I am glad to hear that. I'm also thanking God for what He has done, is doing, and will do with your situation there. Amen? I love you both. |

Preston, you wrote: How can we love God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind? From Part I: Get rid of anything or anyone that has taken His place in your heart, the idols. From Part II: Get rid of the distractions, the stuff, the unnecessary, anything that's distracting us from thinking about God and hearing from Him. From Part III: Build up your prayer life with God and be thankful for everything He is doing or is allowing to happen in life. And finally, "believe". Amen? :-) There is so much to it, but all is eventually put into place through the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. He himself is our salvation; in him we are the righteousness of God, in him we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins. In him are hidden all the treasures of knowledge and wisdom. When we look at the first commandment we have to keep several things in mind: 1) We have to understand that the Ten Commandments are part of a covenant; that covenant was given to a nation not to the world. The reason the law was given was to make sin increase not to produce holy living. The Law [in fact as Romans 7 points out: law, without the definite article] reveals sin by stirring it up within us. It is a tutor, a sign that points to a solution; the solution is Christ. 2) We really need to understand that we are under a NEW covenant; the new covenant goes far beyond the Ten Commandments. Not having committed adultery does not come close to "if you even look on a woman to lust for her then you have committed adultery with her already in your heart." The commandment, written on stone, is the ministry of death because all it can do is to show us that sin dwells within us. It was never intended to be a means to live a righteous life. 3) We must understand that as a Christian, we are as dead to The Law and law in general [Romans 7], as we are dead to sin! When we attempt to "do" the law we are walking by the flesh because law is for sinners, not for the righteous [James]. A dead man does not sin and he does not obey rules because the rules have no jurisdiction over him...he's dead. We were made to die, to law [no definite article in Greek] so that we might live to the One who has been raised from the dead--Christ! 4) Christ, who is our very life, fulfills the law by living for us and through us by the Spirit. [If we walk by the Spirit we will not carry out the desires of the flesh: so the desires and flesh are still there] The New Covenant is not forgiveness, the gift of righteousness, and then us living by the Ten Commandments or any other list of rules or external examples. The New Covenant is a law written on our hearts by the Spirit of God and lived by God causing us to walk in it--He is in us both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Our faith in him is the one essential...we must mix the word with faith or we will not experiencially see him living through us. As an analogy: if my hand wanted to live for me--because it is a very zealous hand--it may well say to me in the morning "Just tell me what your will is and 'I' will do it!" I might then give it a list of ten rules about how to be a perfect hand...not to make it successful in its desired to live in independence, but so that it will come to see that apart from me it can do nothing! That it will never be a true "hand" until it yields itself completely to me to let me live my life through it! As long as it is trying to live its life for me the only thing it will accomplish is to display its complete inability to accomplish the task! It will, at best, look like it has some nervous system disorder! So it is with the Ten Commandments...they were given to drive a people to God and prepare them for the answer: Christ. It is a mistake to reject the answer and then try to live by the sign that was pointing to it! It's also a mistake to accept Christ and then try to live by an external law. We, of course, are not lawless...because Christ does not sin and He lives through us, by our trusting him to do so. It is admittedly, a learning adventure! :-) Best regards, Craig |

Yes Lara, I see it that way too. The more I think about it, the more I believe that "faith in faith" is really "new age." It is faith in the supposed power of belief, rather than belief and trust in God. Craig |

| Haha. I say that and yet.....a couple weeks ago, I had diarhea, and I thought I might barf. I just had that feeling, and I started pacing back and forth and must have said "By Jesus' stripes I'm healed" a hundred times. and guess what? The diarhea stopped as quickly as it had come. So there's something to working the Word of God, HOWEVER, our faith is in God and His word, and not in ourselves. |

I feel like I just got homework, and LOVE it! I am not at all satisfied with my love walk with Jesus, I want MORE! Thanks Preston, I was driving on my hour long drive tonight from work thinking I had not heard from you in awhile. I have books to mail to you, Joey and Carrie Ann this week, just got busy preparing for work and mom's doctor and my own visit. Dad had a hard day and they said that they may put him back in the hospital tomorrow, which would be the 4th time since Christmas. Believe with me please. God can heal him but if He isn't going to, I want his passing to be peaceful and take him home to life eternal. love you |

Sorry guys, got behind a little. Hello Craig, well, again, I think we agree. Except the simplicity and purity of devotion statement at the beginning. It just not either of those for me. What issues I've been discussing in this 4 part set, I actually have had or still have to deal with in order to maintain the kind of devotion (love) God wants from me. Some of it is my own falt, but there is much in the world set against our relationship. But Gods Word shows us that these things will help us.
Pandabear, Back-at-cha Friend. Love ya.
Juanita, I am so with you,... I know you would miss him if our Father took Him home, but it would be awesome for him. I pray for peace and Gods will, Amen? Love ya. |

The Church of Ephesus struggled to stay in love with God..."Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first." Revelation 2:4-5. We need to continually remember the height from which we have fallen. Thanks Preston for another thought provoking blog...love you. |

Amen, Dear Friend. I know you Love Him the way you express it. Which Reminds me of todays verse. 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is of any avail, but faith working through love.

Have to de-junk the brain and work very digiligently on the prayer life until it becomes as natural as swallowing water... continual converstation, thanking Him. Looking for what He has done, and what He has given to us.. for His glory in all things. Amen. |
