5:10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. 5:11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. 5:12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and [your] nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 5:16Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. 5:17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. 5:18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. 5:19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 5:20Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. Probably the best way to start out thinking in terms of prayer would not be to thinking about examples of suffering and patience. The prophets were those that had connections to God and James points out, how they suffered. How many times in scripture do you read of healing and deliverance that took place over a period of time. God's word speaks of instantaneous healing but sometimes, it's not and there's some suffering involved. James makes a statement that most hurting people, probably would not appreciate in saying happy are they that endure. Job is given as an example of suffering, Job during this time of suffering chose not to blame God. Job's wife and friends had a hard time with Job's suffering, in so that they attributed it to some sin, Job had committed. God restored to Job his family and things, but this was over a period of time. James gets into the power of confession with the mouth, let your yeah be yeahs and your nay's be nay's. There is a lot of black and white issues that sometimes Christian's don't take a stand against. Homosexuality is condemned from the old testament to the new testament, yet some suppose to be Christians say they don't really know if it's right or wrong. Abortion is looked at the same way, killing an unborn baby in the womb is murder even when it's done by a doctor. James warns about falling into condemnation, how can anybody feel good about allowing something that they know from scriptures is wrong? The Bible speaks of giving no place to the devil, how can we be victorious believers, when we allow the devil to bully us and to eat our lunch on a regular basis? If all you ever confess is how the devil's did this and how he's done that, where does God fit into your life? James ask an interesting question, Is there any afflicted among you? Let them pray, why is it that people during a time of affections, think that they have to have somebody else to pray for them? There's nothing wrong with getting others to pray with you, but James says, let them pray. If your house was on fire and there's a hose connected to a water line are you going to wait on the fire department to come five minutes away, before you start spraying water on the fire? Is there any sick? Let them call for the elders or the mature brethren in the Lord to pray for them. Do you want someone praying for you, that's not constantly seeking the Lord and living right when you need a healing? The prayers of most so called christian won't clear the ceiling, I want somebody that I know loves Jesus and serves Jesus. I want those that really believe, when they pray that God can and will do something on my behalf. James says, to take this a step further in having them anoint you with oil laying on their hands, in the name of the Lord. ( Jesus ) Mark 16:18, Jesus says, they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover. Jesus said, these things that I do, and even greater shall you do. Jesus didn't limit healing to just the time that he walk upon this earth, healing is extended to all that will believe. The prayer of faith, not the amount of money one can afford to pay with determine healing in Jesus name. Hebrews 11 is full of by faith, how God moved for his people. By faith in Christ sins are forgiven, there's lots of sickness that are connected to sin. Being filled with hate for no reason can cause people to have nervious breakdowns, stomach conditions ulcers and all kinds of other illnesses. Having one's sin under the blood of Jesus can take a lot off of one's blood pressure. Confessing our faults one to another, beware of telling things that you don't want known or broadcast. There are those within the church that tend to tell things, that you might have done before you came to Christ your confession may be used against you. Use a little wisdom about telling your past to the church folks, God already knows what you've done and He's forgiven you. Pray one for another and the prayer of a righteous man or woman can change things. James brings up the prophet Elijah, how that he prayed and God shut up the heavens from raining three and a half years. Can you shut up the heavens with your prayer? Can you call down fire in the presence of those that served false gods? Can you part the Jordan river? James says something we as believers need to understand, here's the great revelation about the power of God manifested through Elijah. He was a man of like passions as we are, just plain ole flesh and blood borned under the same curse as we are. The closing verses talk about something that goes hand and hand with having power with God in prayer. That is a heart to pray for lost people that need the same experience of being born again that you've experienced. Daniel said, he that winneth souls is wise. Reaching out to the lost as why Jesus came, He came to seek and to save them that were lost. So when God anoints you to pray the prayer to heal all manner of sickness, remember those that are sin sick. |
