For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
The world's value system tells us that he who dies with the most toys wins. That's the love of the world that we are warned against in 1 John 2:15 (NIV) -- that "if anyone loves world, the love of the Father is not in him." Even if you acquire all the things offered by the world — the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does -- the fact remains that this life is short and eternity is long. No matter what we can get in terms of money, power, social standing, places of honor -- it pales compared to the values we need to be concerned about for the long haul. Even a hope in Christ that spans only this present world would leave us "to be pitied more than all men." (1 Corinthians 15:19) But our hope goes well beyond this present world; it's the life that is spoken of in Mark 8:36 -- eternal life, which isn't worth forfeiting at any price. It comes only through the grace of Jesus Christ; you can't get it anywhere else. He is THE way, THE truth and THE life. (John 14:6) So don't forfeit life in the manner that Esau forfeited his birthright to Jacob!! Hebrews 12:16-17) For as it is written, "how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?" (Hebrews 2:3) |
