Emily, There is nothing wrong with having possessions. That's not what this is talking about. It's talking about what's most important to you. If it's more important to you to get more and more things, instead of loving more and more people, then you're sagainst the things God says are most important. And chances are that will cause a lot of arguments and fights. "The world" that James 4:4 talks about means unbelievers' emphasis on greed and selfishness, which, yes, is a kind of coveting. It's also the opposite of being generous and caring about others. But remember that the Bible also tells us "God so loved the world" -- and that "world" is the people He sent Jesus to save. There's no harm in loving them. Remember, many referred to Jesus as "a friend of sinners."
