When someone goes on a job interview, one of the most frequently asked questions is, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” The interviewer is probing the candidate to find out if they can see the ‘big picture’, or if their focus is only on the here and now. Unfortunately, most people are married to the status quo. They want what is, not what can be. They seek safety and simple answers. But the Word of God warns us that, “Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. (Proverbs 29:18)
A huge part of vision is being able to focus, no? If you’ve ever gone to an optometrist to be fitted for glasses or contact lenses, you know that the main test that the doctor performs is having you look through a series of lenses to achieve the best possible focus. Their job is to help you to see as clearly as possible.
In the 29th chapter of the Book of Jeremiah, the Lord tells us, “I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” We must not lose sight of that. In a nutshell, that is God’s will for our lives and should be our vision and focus. He then gives you the means to achieve all that he has planned for you – “not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord.” There you have it, your prescription lenses, the Holy Ghost! He will lead you into all truth and help you to see more clearly than you’ve ever seen before if you will simply just ‘put on’ Christ everyday.
Don’t get lost in the mundane. Seek him, pray in the Spirit daily, read his Word, sing unto him songs of praise, tell him how much you love him, dance before him, tell him of his excellent greatness! He then will remind you the moment you open your eyes each and every morning that you are his beloved, his creation, the called and the chosen for his kingdom from before the foundation of the world, and with confidence you will be able to say, “I am never without hope, Lord, not when my future is with you." And so, your vision remains alive. Selah.
