The Hallowed Third Person of the Trinity, The Holy Spirit, has been around since the beginning of all things, just like the Father and the Son: " In the beginning
Elohim (the
plural term) created the heavens and the earth . . . and the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters . . . and
Elohim said, 'Let
us make man in
our image, in
our likeness" (Gen. 1:1, 2b, 26a). He has been involved and dynamic since the creation. He was not just the "new kid on the block" that entered on the day of Pentecost. He led and gave guidance and assistance to Moses (Ex. 14:19), the artists of the Tabernacle (Ex. 31:3, 35:31), Balaam (Nu. 24:2), Joshua (De. 34:9), Othniel (Jud. 3:10), Gideon (Jud. 6:34), Jephthah (Jud. 11:29), Samson (Jud. 13:25, 14:6, 19, 15:14), Saul (I Sam. 10:10, 11:6, 19:23), and Saul's men (I Sam. 19:20), along with David, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and all the prophets who saw or spoke as the Spirit gave utterance.
In the Old Testament, His work seemed confined to one man or a small group. Jesus Christ ushered in the fulfillment of the prophesy of Joel: "In the last days I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh, Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on My servants, both men and women, I will pour out My Spirit in those days" (2:28-29). "Those days" have arrived, and how blessed we are to live in a time when the Holy Spirit indwells His people! "But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, the Spirit who calls out, 'Abba, Father.' So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir" (Gal. 4:4-7). The Holy Spirit comes to our aid the same as He did to the aid of the heroes of the Bible. He grants us freedom and the ability to live a spiritual life. "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit . . . Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. . . If Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who lives in you" (Romans8:1-11).
Jesus promised the disciples, "When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you" (John 16:13-14). The Holy Spirit is our Counselor, Comforter, Teacher, Guide and Envoy. He is no less than the Father; He is no less than the Son; He is the eternal completion of the Triune Godhead from everlasting to everlasting, and He deserves our honor and praise. He is still bringing life in Revelation 11:11; He is still testifying in Revelation 14:13; and in Revelation 22:17, He is still joining His voice to ours, the bride, calling out to Christ, "Come!"
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!
Praise Him all creatures here below!
Praise Him above ye heavenly host!
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost! Amen
14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
