3:1 Likewise you wives, be submissive to your husbands, so that some, though they do not obey the word, may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives,
One of the most controversial topics in the Bible now-a-days, it seems. Shoud a woman be submissive to their husbands? Let's propose for a second that a woman should not be submissive to their husbands, because this is the popular opinion today. Why would this be true? I suppose that someone might say that men and women are equal and desire equal treatment. Byut why would one say this? They would have to conclude this based on some reasoning, whether it be psychology or sociology or anthropology or what have you.
In this case, it would obviously be religion. And in particular, Christianity. One could say that they hold a field such as Anthropology's conclusion higher than Christianity's conclusion, but for a Christian to conclude that would contridict their own belief system's structure. I believe this is a very important point. Therefore the Bible has to be the dominant doctrine and belief system for Christian or atlest trump any other belief system, and a contridicting belief in particular.
Now Historically speaking, we must acknowledge that Catholicism is the originator of the Christian perspective and practices that we use today. And we still hold a lot of similar traditions and rituals of theirs, with some differences. Having the Church leaders be the sole interpreter of the Bible, in particular, arguably one of the most significant changes, sparkd by Martin Luther in his "95 Thesis". This birthed the Protestant movement. This is what most Americans are. A main belief, as just stated, being that the Church leaders are not the sole interpreters of the Bible, but that individuals can interpret the Bible themselves and have a personal relationship with God. Therefore, someone can interpret the Bible how they please as long as they are under some Protestant belief.
This would suggest, then, that one can conclude that the Bible, which is still is dominant law always, can be interpreted by an indivudual to not suggest that wives should not submit to their husbands. At this point, they obviously would have to give specific scriptures to support this position. These positions, though I have searched, do not seem to be in what I read of the Bible so far. Certainly not The Book of Genesis or the New Testament as a whole. In fact is just the opposite, their are multiple suggestions in the New Testament and in Genesis to support that it is proper for women to submit to their husbands. This is a fact, whether it seems harsh or not.
At this point, therefore, if someone was to disregard this, I feel that they would be using selective obdience and disregarding specific scriptures of their choosing. Does this not lead to furthur contradictions? Can you say that it is okay to steal and not to kill? Can one say that it is okay for you to disobey your leaders and Kings, or in our case President, when it clearly states that the opposite is true? Selective obdience results in one leaning to their own understanding and being wise in their own eyes. Does the Old Testament not give many stories about people who have to only listen to all of God's Commandments to be truly righteous? For one to use selective obdience to the commandments in the Bible, I feel denounces the person as a Christian, logically speaking.
Finally, should men therefore loose their obligations to their wives and to their family freely? Are there not significant consequences that will come from this? We, as Christians, do not listen to the Bible for our own pleasure. We, Christians, obey the Bible, because we have came to the realization that we were made to serve God and acknowledge that we are sinners who only Jesus Christ can save through our Faith in him, and repentance and Good acts as he Commands.
I write this in Jesus's Name,
Amen and Thank God.
