| Shangri la and the Tower of Babel |
|
| |
It's 1:25 a.m. and i can't sleep. It must have something to do with that rather long nap I took. Again. I slept so soundly that I didn't even hear the phone ringing or the pounding on the door, when brother was trying to let me know that the dinner he had prepared was ready. Wow! I seldom sleep so soundly. I think perhaps I haven't been getting as much “rest” as usual despite all the naps I've been taking, as I am not accustomed to all the 'downtown' sounds. As I sit here typing this blog, I can see out of my 10th floor window across to the other side of the west end. I am looking at the tallest building in the city, silhouetted by its lights. It is called the Shangri La. The Shangri La is a recently built luxury building with the first 15 floors of suites being offered as hotel rentals and the remaining 48 floors and suites as individually owned properties. Here is a photo of the Shangri La. You can see that is easily the tallest building in the city. The height of the Shangri La hotel evokes an image in my mind of the Tower of Babel as told in Genesis, chapter 11. As the story goes, the tower was built by a unified people coming from the east and speaking a singular language. They they built the tower as high as they possibly could to try to reach the heavens. [Artist's renditon of the Tower of Babel] "Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.' "(Genesis 11:4). When God saw this he scattered the people and caused confusion amongst them by giving them many different languages so that they could no longer communicate with each other as before. Just think. How long ago the men of old tried to build a Tower of Babel and yet today they are still doing it. Our tower in Vancouver is relatively short compared to many other structures around the world that have been built (Burj Dubai in Dubai, KVLY TV Mast in North Dakota, CN Tower in Toronto, Taipei 101 in Taipei). Man is still building high towers that scrap the sky and give glory to man. It astounds me that we have yet to learn the lessons of the past. But you and I can play a part to bring the good news and the lesson of the bible to our fellow man, whether it be our co-worker, our boss, our next door neighbour, our waiter, a friend, a person in need, a person you run into on the street. There are people everywhere if we only spend some time asking God how he would have us reach out to them. 9:37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly [is] plenteous, but the labourers [are] few. |
