In these very uncertain times, we all search for something we can believe in--something that will not change. Some people look to family, some to academics and degrees, some to money and investments, some to people of great reputation. I stand with the Psalmist who said, "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God (20:7). Yahweh, Jehovah, whatever name you choose, He is the only immutable [unchangeable] force in existence. Some may say the forces of nature do not change. We know who set all of nature in motion: "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So He became as much superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father'? Or again, 'I will be His Father and He will be my Son'? And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says, 'Let all God's angels worship Him.' In speaking of the angels He says, 'He makes His angels winds, His servants flames of fire.' But about the Son He says, 'Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore [I love this!] God, your God, has set You above Your companions by anointing You with the oil of joy.' In the beginning, O Lord, You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your Hands. They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But You remain the same, and Your years will never end" (Heb. 1:3-12).
Our God is like a solid rock--He is immutable! "But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel" (Gen. 49:24); "He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just" (Deut. 32:4); "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold" (Psalm 18:2); "Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord is the Rock eternal" (Isaiah 26:4). In Matthew 7, Jesus tells us that,
7:24 Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock:
7:25 and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and iit fell not: for it was founded upon the rock.
7:26 And every one that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand:
7:27 and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall thereof.
Throughout the scriptures we are assured of the steadfast, immutable nature of Yahweh. "He who is the glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind" (I Sam. 15:29); "I the Lord do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed" (Mal. 3:6); But He became a priest without an oath when God said to Him, 'The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind: You are a priest forever, because of His oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant" (Heb. 7:21-22); "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever" (Heb. 13:8); "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17).
"But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, who He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe" (Heb. 1:2). We can have confidence that our God loves us, because He said so; we can have confidence that He saves us, because He said so; we can have confidence that He protects us, because He said so; we can have confidence that He defends us, because He said so; we can have confidence that He provides for us, because he said so; and our God does not change!
Heavenly Father, Lord of All, please create in me a steadfast heart. According to Your immutable word, what You have done in me will last. I shall not be moved! Amen
1:2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
