5:17 Pray without ceasing. Just a quick exhortation for all of us (myself included) brought upon by my previous blog Fishers of Men, where a need for Godly guidance is talked about. The Lord wants us to spend our lives with a mindset of constant communication with Him, the samekind of mindset we would have if a person was physically right next to us walking alongside us. He isn't looking for people whose hearts say "I'm going to spend 23 hours, 59 minutes and 48 seconds of each day doing things my way, however I feel like doing them, and the other twelve seconds I'll spend quickly praying for God's will, just so that my bases are covered". If you've so far (or perhaps just recently) been a "twelve seconds in prayer" Christian, then take this exhortation to heart and ask the Lord to help you have a mindset that wants to always be in communication with Him, regardless of where you are or what you're doing. Some of my most precious times of communication with Him are times when I'm 30 feet in the air on my order-picker and He chooses to whisper a few words to my heart that I need to hear, and then knowing they were from Him I respond with praise and thanksgiving for that communique. You wouldn't be able to even find out what's for dinner in a phone call 12 seconds long. How would you expect a loved one to respond if you called them, gave them 12 seconds worth of information, then hung up the phone without allowing them even the time to process what you were saying, much less respond? So why do we then think that "shooting up a quick one" to the Lord would be any more effective -- or joyous for Him -- than doing the same with another loved one here? 4:6 Be anxious for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. Not in some things, not in "the really important things", not for twelve seconds to "cover your bases" -- in EVERY thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, communicate with God. Just talk to Him. He's waiting... I'll let you two be alone now. :) |
