| Ben the Hitch-Hiker |
|
| |
The first time I met Ben I was traveling to Fayetteville to sign some papers with my soon to be ex husband regarding the one home we thought we would sell before foreclosure. For some odd reason I stopped by to send off something to my daughter 30 minutes early, but the post office was only 6 miles out of the way. Yeah there was a reason I had to leave early, I had a few more stops before my appointment. See Ben was walking along the highway packing a huge backpack and it was starting to get warm. It took me a while to make that U-turn then three point turns to go back and pick him up. God told me to pick him up, so I did.
As we shared our stories, I found out that Ben left his good job in Jersey to come down to this area to take care of his dying mom. Well she passed on about two years ago and this was when all the layoffs started to happen, so jobs have become scarce. He found it difficult to find work. His divorce took everything and he had to sell his car. His mom did not own a house or a car, so Ben started to walk to different friends homes and he even walked to Georgia and picked up a tent. Mind you he cannot get on unemployment because he chose to leave his job, he is also in his late 50's. This man lives on complete faith for every meal, maybe a place to stay and hopefully a ride to his destination for the day. He is a good Godly man, and I really respect how he is handling his valleys. I asked Ben where he was going it wasn't far from where my appointment. He told me that he was going to the blood bank in town for money to get a bus to go up to Virginia just for a Sunrise Easter Service at another friend’s church. As we pulled up to his destination, God told me, “Give Ben that $5 you have in your wallet”. I was like, “Ok Lord, but you know I have been saving it for a car wash for a long time. “ So as he grabbed his home and all his belongings out of my back seat, I pulled out my $5 and gave it to him. We both blessed each other and he went on. This was on a Monday. Wednesday after church, this sweet little elderly lady named Alice came up to me. She insisted on giving me some money. My pride got in the way and I argued a little bit with her that I was really fine. As her eyes swelled up and she began to cry, she told me for the third time, “God told me to give it to you.” It broke my heart and my pride, so I took it. When I opened the wad of money up she had given me $50! God blessed me 10 fold what I had given to Ben. Almost two months later, I am driving home from the strawberry patch. I see a hitchhiker and I know what I must do, it was scorching hot today. The closer I get, I see that it is Ben. I was so excited to see that he was well, and I was excited to talk about God with him again to share what He has been doing in our lives. I told him I was only going up the road about 3 miles, and asked where he was going. He was traveling about 40 miles away, I told him that my car gets good mileage and I would take him. He was so joyous he wanted to hug me, but I was driving. As we shared in our generalities, I began to tell him what happened to me after I gave him that $5 on our first meeting. Then he tells me his story as of late. He said he was in a store cooling off and saw some kids that looked like they were starving as they were by the video games pretending to play, then also looking at food and counting change. Ben had $1.58 on him. He gave those kids $1.00. He said the next day a complete stranger just came up to him and said "You look like you are having a hard time." That stranger gave Ben $100, and he was blessed 100 fold.
21:2 and he saw a poor widow put in two copper coins. 21:3 And he said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; I hope and pray I continue to see Ben on the highway, but more so I pray HE gets a job soon and doesn't have to live that way. I also praise God, because my situation could always be worse.

[star!] | God does do that. The Bible says God does test us. Not tempt us, but test/try us, and He will see if we will be obedient. And yes, He always blesses us for it! My husband and I are known for picking up hitchhikers and it's such an opportunity to witness or encourage a person, isn't it? |

| Lara Yes it is a great opportunity! I have though asked the Lord if I should pick up certain people and He has told me "NO" before. So even though it is something a single woman is "never supposed to do". I am a little fearless about it when I can hear the HS tell me it is ok. |

[star!] | You brought back many memories of 35 years ago when I used to hitch hike home from school. God always brought me these amazing people who NEVER picked up hitch hikers, but they would stop and pick up me. I pray God will continue to both bless you and protect you,and maybe even give you an Angel or two to pick up. |

PJ... You and I talked about this on many occasions... before on my previously deleted blogs about my calling street evangelism and the broken and unlovely during countless chatting on messenger, and on blogs. God is so good and when you can clearly hear HIS discernment through LISTENING and OBEYING the Holy Spirit, you are led safely to plant a small seed that hopefully will be watered into a beautiful saved soul, even if you never see that soul again until heaven. You, Mike & Laura, and countless others have counceled me wisely on when to witness, and when to be silent when it comes to street ministry, when to make a uturn and pick someone up and when to drive on by. But that doesn't mean that I wish to become foolish and not yeild to your wise teachings,
I receive you and others wise words with vigor. Thank you my dear friend and counselor. May God bless you always. |

| Mule... my comment was not to hurt your feelings... surely, prayerfully, hopefully your last comment was made in jest. I am a little pooped today, so my discernment on your humor maybe a little slow and off.... I said that out of love for you... I aced calculus, but flunked geography and got an average grade on biology... aren't mules and donkey the same animal???? LOL |

|
| Yep. You are a bit slow today (I am everyday) but that's ok. They are the same. Donkey doesn't sound as cool as mule. Besides, how would the Talking Donkey sound? The donkey in Shriek (just saw that on tv yesterday) was really stupid and had to just about have a picture drawn for it. Like "GET IT???!!!!" He was really hard-headed (Surely not like me, just don't go asking my wife. Deal?). lol if I have to. :o) |

Joey - AMEN Yeah me too. If I was quicker on the draw I would take more pictures with my phone... but you know me miss chatty cathy drinking a diet dew... the mouth runs and I don't think about a picture all the time when I am seeing a cool blog to share with friends.
AMEN... I have been ready to meet you for a couple of years now. I love you so Joey. More so, I love the JESUS I SEE IN YOU... you are a true Prov 31 example of how to submit and be a good bride to our Lord for all women. Thanks for your obedience. |
