19:26 When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"
19:27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
Hello Folks. I havent been blogging in while here. Some of my friends encouraged me to blog here again. I thank all those of you who encouraged me to write.
This passage is a very familiar passage which is usually discussed at the time of Passion week especially on a Good Friday. In our church, our church elders usually request one of the ladies to elaborate on this subject. I wanted to study this passage and ask God to enable me to discern what He really wanted to teach me from this passage.
On reading the passage, you will notice that there are three characters. One is Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the second is his mother and the third is his disciple. Therefore we see obviously there is a 'relationship' involved. We also realise that there is a 'responsibilty' involved as Jesus gives the responsibility of taking care of his mother to the disciple and he gladly accepts it almost immediately.
1. Relationship:
There were 11 disciples at Calvary on that day. The responsibility of looking after the mother goes to the 'disciple whom he loved'. We are all disciples of Jesus. Today let us examine ourselves and ask a question to ourselves, 'In the eyes of my Lord, am I a disciple whom my Lord Loves?'
2. Responsibilty:
Jesus calls his mother, 'woman'. As an Indian, it is very difficult for me address my mother as a woman. It is considered disrespectful, if you dont call ones mother as 'amma' which means mom instead of just calling her as a woman. I am sure in many cultures it is the same. I therefore wanted to check what is the root word in greek which was used here. I found that the word that was used is 'goo-nay' in greek which says is used for person with intimacy including a wife. We know that the church is the bride of our Lord.
The responsibilty may be our church, a ministry, a mission or anything that the Lord expects us to take care of, so that it would bring glory to God.
To me, it makes sense to understand figuratively, that the responsiblity of taking care of the most precious thing of our Lord Jesus was given to the most beloved disciple.
I am therefore encouraged by our Lord to examine,
1. If I am just a disciple or a beloved disciple whom the Lord loved? in other words, is my relationship with the Lord very special?
2. If I have taken responsiblity of what the Lord desired me to do?
I would like to encourage you too my brothers and sisters to check your relationship with God and to understand the responsiblity that He has given you.
Have a blessed day!
