| Adversity and a doggie (Recipe for a great marriage?) |
|
| |
On February 19 of this year, as I walked into our house after work, an unfamiliar little white fluffy creature bounced up and greeted me, followed closely by a very tickled wife. I must say, given the smile on Laura’s face, her new doggie was worth it.
I’m not a dog person, never have been. Of course, I never actually forbade a dog. But it was pretty easy to read the clues. Just about the last thing I wanted in our house was another dog, after our experiences with Oscar the barking, stinky, hyperactive, ever-licking, dinner table begging, peed-on-everything-in-the-yard, (did I say barking?), perpetually pooping pooch! (I think he set records for # of piles in a day.)
After Oscar, we went 8-9 years w/o a dog. For the most part our family got on just fine too, although Laura did remind me often that something important was missing from her life.
Our marriage was already in a good place when the new doggie came (thanks partly to a great small group study on Rocking the Roles by Lewis & Hendricks). But the day “Sophie” joined our family, I felt as though the missing piece had been found which could transform me from a good husband to a great one! That’s right, a doggie; sometimes it really is the little things! (Full-grown at 7 lbs., Sophie is definitely one of those little things, too!) Fortunately, life hasn’t been all that bad for this cat person since Sophie came. She certainly isn’t another Oscar, and she doesn’t pester me much either. Actually I think she knows she’ll have to answer to my cat, which is 3x her size, hehehe...
Recently, difficult trials have further strengthened our marriage, really tough ones, the kinds involving family relationships and close friendships. But once again, what Satan meant for harm, God used for good. In fact, these painful trials have increased my appreciation, respect, and love for Laura, and deepened my walk with the Lord, like few things ever before! Marriage conferences, relationship books, support groups…none of it has helped our marriage like a little adversity. Shall I say, thank you Satan?
Adversity and a doggie, two things for which I never would have thought I’d be genuinely thankful!

(Happy wife = happy family!) |

| If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy! I want to say sorry for your struggles, but how can I if they made your marriage stronger? God can use troublesome times to bring about something good. I know the adversary hates that! Cute little puppy dog! I'm an animal lover. |

If it takes a little dog well then just more love in the family. Satan will NOT have a grip on this family! You are a family that overcomes and praises the Lord! Praising God for what he does for you! |

[star!] | This is so Special. Laura has one of Gods Jewels and I see the Glow. It's not the dog Mike, It's you and the God in you. I love to hear "Love Stories" like this. It confirms that God is forever in the Marriage business and it gives a lot of hope to me and others that to never give up on Love or your Marriage if you still have the opportunity. God"s love is the Key. I just Love you guys. |

I have always told Jim he can skip the flowers and cards I like animals. bring me a kitten or puppy or something..I even like hamsters which a lot of wives would not allow let alone want. He still hasn't but I won't stop hoping. My son brought home a puppy for his kids and his wife who is blonde didn't want another pet, but fell in love with Jack because he was blonde like her. lol She said she had never had a blonde dog. Son said he went up several notches in the husband and father role. You will go up notches with accepting Sophie. Jim took to Gideon with jokes about my guinea mouse as he refers to this brave and independent hamster who won my heart. Rahab, our cat, became Jim's cat more than mine. He calls her the Rehab because of all the medical bills when we rescued her and she is on his lap more than mine by five times minimum. |

Heard a great message this morning about humility. The preacher used a camera as an example. Paraphrased VERY loosely: Speaking of fruit of the Spirit...We take a picture of someone with a traditional Camera (let's say Sophie). We have the picture in the camera (Just like when Christ comes to dwell in us, we have the seed of the fruits.) However, to view the pic and share with others, we have to go into the dark room (trials) to DEVELOP the picture (fruit). It is through the tough times that see our fruit grow and others see it as well. Praise our Maker, that through the rough times, He turned what Satan meant for evil into beautiful fruit in your marriage and family. I wish the "dark rooms" weren't so, well, dark! But for the glory of God and the promise of His will being done, we enter willingly. Blessings! |

| Penny, it has been a difficult spring. w/o God (AND Sophie), it would have been a miserable spring! As it is, our troubles continue (important relationships are now either gone, diminished, or changed forever). BUT...that ISN'T to say we are downcast. We don't dwell on that which represents the devil's work around us, but that which represents GOD'S work!! (And there is MUCH of that to see, if we're lookin' in the right places!) |

Cubbie, hehe, you make me laugh! I think you should start lookin for a 130 lb cat, LOL. You would think our cat could handle your Retriever, but he's actually not as brave as he looks. But when faced w/a 7 lb GIRL doggie, he does manage to find enough courage to stand up, lol. David/Pam, I do have a few. Message me more about what you're looking for! Liz, you're welcome, LOL. I can laugh with you now, but believe me I wasn't laughing much when we had him. ESPECIALLY when I was in the back yard w/the pooper scooper! |

Angie, thanks for adding that neat perspective. I appreciate my brothers and sisters so much, for the encouragement and wisdom shown to us during these times. YOU were provided to us by the Lord. Yes, he was (and has been) with us in the Spirit, but YOU all were with us tangibly, and continue to be. I am ever thankful for YOU!! ps... Really marvelous illustration! I think I'll remember that one! |

[star!] | How cute Mike.. Need a picture of YOU with Sophie.
Adversity and changes are things that we cannot avoid. They help us grow as God's children. Some are so hard that we just don't see them coming and we're just totally rocked by them. God has set a path for each and every one of us and it is our duty to follow it. He never leads us wrong and is always there with the advice and strength for us to make it through. We just have to persevere and obey.
Much love little brother and give Sherlock a great big hug for me.... |

[star!] | As you know I am a cat person, but I like dogs too. I just don't have time for a dog, whereas cats are much more independent...and any struggle that I have ever had in my marriage, and there have been several, has always led to a stronger bond. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. |

Lara, yes she is. :) And ya know, there is difference between adversity IN your marriage and that which is outside of your marriage. Sometimes adversity can pull you and your spouse apart, if one or both aren't following the Lord. Fortunately that isn't happening in our case. I'm sooo thankful for my wife!! Crystal, LOL!! Hubby won't eat dog biscuits, eh? lol!! Thanks MarJay, appreciate that, sister. :) |

[star!] | Beverly never had kids but boy, the toy poodle we got thinks he's the little man of the house. Beverly got Coco 3 1/2 yrs. ago but since she worked at the hospital and couldn't leave him at home, guess who took that little 6 week old baby to work in a semi? That's right, your's truly. Now there was a sight; me, a 300 pound truck driver with a tiny little toy poodle who fit in the palm of my hand. Coco rode with me for almost a year before I left him home. He thinks he should go with me everywhere. Now I have a side kick everywhere I go and should I leave him to go to the store for 5 minutes, he acts as if I had been gone a month. I love that little dog and Beverly dotes on him like the baby she never had. I always see her doing every little special thing she can for Coco and I tell her,"Sure wished I was a poodle!" |

[star!] | There is just something about being able to praise and be thankful in times of adversity. It's when things are tough in relationships that you find out what they are made of.Often when you get through it and survive you are closer and have an even newer, larger, respect and admiration for people. It's a respect you would never have found if it hadn't been tried by fire. The God we serve is truly an awesome God who we can trust. P.S. Your wife is beautiful and your little dog is quite cute and tiny.My husbands cat is also bigger than your dog, but fortunately for me his poor, confused cat thinks she is an Oodle. |

How neat! We've been reading about the great characteristics of the Havanese breed and will be visiting the pups this weekend (which prob means game over, since when can you resist puppies right?).

Game OVER!! lol! Hey, we heard that some, perhaps many, Havanese can be pretty hyperactive. If that's what you want, great! Odds are in your favor! We managed to get one that is sweet and laid back. She just sighs and lays out on your lap. She's a keeper! Actually I joke, Sophie is quite cat-like! If you can find a calmer one, TAKE him/her! ps... We read/heard that the breed was developed to herd chickens. Believe that!!? |
