| Thoughts on 2 Corinthians 4:4 |

4:4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the likeness of God. Satan, the "god of this world", has done such an intricate job of twisting truth, that even many who think they see the light, are being deceived. The more it seems the Holy Spirit opens my eyes, the more shocked I am to see how many people are lost. It's truly what people don't know that hurts them. This is what Paul understood here...his experience at Damascus was the ultimate "eye opener", "see the light" type experience. If there's anyone who was enlightened by God more at such a crucial moment in history, I have yet to meet them or read their material.
So, how can we bring people out in the light? Recent research has made it clear that standard Bible study and Sunday School isn't helping. It's not building a strong foundation by addressing the questions and challenges people have. It's engaging attentions more than their minds.
None of this is helped when the Bible's authority is undermined daily, and the church turns a blind eye. Knowledge, apologetics, in-depth study, seminary - have all become things that are just for certain "seekers". The church has reacted poorly to the shifts in culture, resisting the change so much they forget to embrace the people behind it.
Paul says that God appointed prophets above teachers - where is this reflected in the evangelical church? There was good reason for this - prophets see the truth as is, teachers need to make sure they're not compromising that. The average person is seeking and attending church, but they are still living a life where the world is more important. It's time we start making a change - before it becomes harder to do so! The mission field in the USA is ripe - let's take it head on! We must put God in more authority and be careful how we train our leaders. |
