To add a comment to "if I only had courage."

Courage is an interesting thing.  Elijah had it... and then he didn't.

19:1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 19:2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do [to me], and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. 19:3 And when he saw [that], he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which [belongeth] to Judah, and left his servant there. 19:4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I [am] not better than my fathers.

The background for the killing of the prophets can be found the chapters before this one and includes one of my favorite "funny" verses.

18:27 At noon, Elijah began making fun of them. "Pray louder!" he said. "Baal must be a god. Maybe he's day-dreaming or using the toilet or traveling somewhere. Or maybe he's asleep, and you have to wake him up."

Hey Dave,

It's a real mixed bag isn't it?  Like you, I have felt like this often, but what did Jesus do?  Did He intervene in ever ugly crime?  Did he stop every injustice that was going on around Him?  Did He go chasing devils, so He could cast them out of everybody?

1 Tim 2:1-5 says, "therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus."

Some situations I think we are called to pray only (and wouldn't it be great if every Police officer was a believer)?.. other situations we are called to act.

Sometimes (I think), it seems the devil would like nothing better than to keep us discouraged because we are always looking at our performance. Maybe if we would pray more for those in authority (daily), the area you live in would be cleaned up because the power of God did it... and it was Policed by Godly men and women... who were elected to carry a gun?

How in the world (while in this World), can we lead a quiet and peaceable life when there are so many conflicts that we could get into... and many are convinced they should get into?

Maybe the secret solution is in the verse: pray with boldness that the devil and demonic be cast out and that all men and women in authority, judge with Godly wisdom?

and let's not forget 2 Tim 1:7, "for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." - which makes me think and ask... do we exercise a Spirit of power and boldness in prayer enough?  Seems to have been a remedy for Jesus oftentimes.

Dave, your desire for courage is to be admired. (and I do!)  I imagine the time will come when God will prompt you to action. Like R above says though, don't sell prayer short. I imagine our first response should always be prayer -- run to God before running into situations which appears to call for intervention. He may call us to action, he may not. But I'm sure he always calls us to pray. That definitely keeps me from beating myself up for all the times I haven't stepped in. ~mike
