This Scripture reminds me of the hurtful things I have experienced at work lately. I could have used a gentle tongue many times, but only received hatefulness. It puts me in the frame of mind to think about the words I share with others in my day. Do I share kind and gentle words or am I harsh and unkind? Do my words build others up or tear them down? I just said to a man, "You can catch more flies with honey Paul, than with vinegar." An old saying, but very effective if followed. Do I use honey or do I only hear the negative that others say and then judge them? In case you haven't noticed, I am very critical of myself. I don't follow the line, "You're only human" as an excuse to say and do the things I do. Instead I follow more in the Apostle Paul's belief that "I do not do what I want, but do the very thing I hate." (Rom. 7:15 NRSV) I want to be more Christ-like in my dealings with others, but struggle each day with worldly issues. One day a co-worker was pushing my buttons and wouldn't let up. I tried desperately to ignore his remarks and condescending words, but it finally got to me and I opened my mouth, swore at him, and told him to "shut up!" My fellow employees were shocked at my behavior because it has never happened before. I was angry for about five minutes then the Holy Spirit took over and convicted me. I went to the ladies room and sobbed for about ten minutes. I cried out to God for forgiveness and asked Him to change my heart. How could I be an effective witness to this group of unbelievers when I was showing them that I was no different then they? I needed to be above that. Afterall, isn't that what a Christian is; set apart? I later appologised to all involved in this encounter and have not fallen to that level since, but am fully aware that without the help of the Holy Spirit I could easily fall prey to it again. So, today this Scripture is more important than ever for me. 15:4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. |

Janet, This world has some not so nice people in it and especiall at work. That being said, I want to share an incident that happened to me at work a couple of years ago (but I'll never forget it) .
Ok, here goes,: Someone had brought in cookies at the beginning of the day and as I was making a cup of coffee I spied the cookies. I took the cookie and figured Shana had made them so I wanted to thank her cuz I was starving and the cookies were awesome. She had brought cookies before and actually she is the only one who ever brought home baked cookies.. Well she was sitting with guy (this guy always spoke so ugly about everything, foul mouth and all) I approached Shana to thank her for making us cookies, well ol' vile mouth pipped up and said "How do you know that I didn't bring the cookies WELL, I SAID, ALL YOU EVER BRING IN THIS PLACE IS YOUR MOUTH,
(THAT JUST FLEW OUT OF MY MOUTH) I actually felt awful.
Everyone in the breakroom was cheering and clapping cuz I put Les in his place, mind you that was not my intention, it just FLEW out of my mouth, (SHAME ON ME) Anyway, here's what God did about it.
I had to go to the prototype garage to get my test car for the day, (1st time I was ever sent there too!!) go figure
Well guess who comes pulling in, yeah Les. God says Yvelisse go APOLOGIZE, I told God I don't want to , WELL HE SAID GO! and of course I was obedient, (not happy but obedient) I went over to Les and ( mind you No one else in the Prototype garage but he and I) So I strolled over to Les to say, Hey Les, I am so sorry I blurted that out to you and he said you're not sorry and you meant what you said, and I told him, yeah I meant what I said but I was sorry for saying it. He was stunned. I shook his hand and left. Well God wasn't done yet, He told me to apologize to those who saw and tell them I apologized to Les, well AGAIN I WAS LIKE,NO, UH GOD SAID YES YOU WILL. Well I told them the story and they all said you don't owe him ANYTHING. (WELL, THAT'S NOT WHAT GOD SAID)
GUESS WHAT MY BIBLE READING WAS THE NEXT DAY?
Psalm 6:10 (King James Version) 10Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly.
Do you know from that day forward Les watched his mouth whn I came in the room, Praise the Lord! I believe because I was obedient to God He made Les be ashamed......... |
