This is the story of my basket of rocks.
Rocks have so much significance in our lives, from memories of our parents getting on to us for throwing rocks, from painting rocks in grade school, skipping rocks at the lake, and from having our rock collections as children. Not to mention that many of our childhood songs had rock references, especially the ones from Sunday school....who build their house upon a rock? It brings back a lot of memories. As we get older, we use rocks in flower beds, my house is built with rocks (stone exterior), I have brought rock painting into my classroom, and the saddest part, the beautifully polished rock that is designed to be a headstone at the grave of a significant person in our lives.
Forest Gump said, "Sometimes, there are just not enough rocks" which I definitely could relate to when referring to anger. The Bible uses so many uses when referring to rocks, from the look on a face to building a firm foundation in our faith. God is referred to as a Rock, rocks can become a shelter or building blocks, like our relationship with God. There were miracles that involved rocks, from water coming from rocks and rocks catching on fire. Some of them, I don't always understand because I am sure the rock is a metaphor for something, but they sound good to me. Here are a few that I found when I googled them, and there were many!
Song of Solomon 2:14 O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.Jeremiah 48:28O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole's mouth.Job 39:28She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.Jeremiah 49:16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, andthe pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD. Judges 13:19So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angeldid wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on.1 Samuel 13:6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.Isaiah 2:19And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. Jeremiah 16:16 Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.Revelation 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;Job 24:8 They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. Job 30:6To dwell in the clifts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks. Isaiah 32:2 And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Matthew 7:24-25Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. Isaiah 22:16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here, ashe that heweth him out a sepulchre on high, andthat graveth an habitation for himself in a rock? Job 19:24 That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever! Job 28:9-10He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots. He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing. Jeremiah 23:29 Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer thatbreaketh the rock in pieces?Exodus 17:6Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.Numbers 20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.Job 14:18And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place. Nahum 1:6 Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him. Deuteronomy 32:18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.Psalms 62:7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.Isaiah 17:10 Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips: Psalms 31:2-3 Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me. Psalms 94:22 But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.Deuteronomy 32:15But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.Psalms 89:26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.Psalms 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 1 Peter 2:6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 1 Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. Psalms 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.Psalms 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. Deuteronomy 32:31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.
There were many more, but as I thought about the significance of rocks, I decided to paint a basket full of rocks in Tyler's school colors (bluejay blue, silver and black) and leave permanent markers in the basket of rocks so his friends who are also grieving his loss can come to his place of rest and leave a message on a rock. Tomorrow, June 21'st, is the first anniversary of his journey into heaven and I wanted to do something for them and in memory of my son. So, I am remembering that God is my rock, my foundation, my everything as He was to Tyler, so I have painted a basket of rocks to signify this event. I shall place a note to Tyler on one side of a rock and I will write Psalms 95:1 on the other. I shall place my rock in the wrought iron basket with the other painted rocks and I will place it at his place of rest. It will be an amazing basket of rocks. May God be your rock each every day and I pray that next time you look at a rock, you will see a miracle of significance and a symbol of God.

[star!] | Oh Lucky One,
I am just bawling as I read this blog. I believe it is probably the best one you have written, but I love all that you have written and have many to catch up on. So it has been about a year, I will be praying for you as this is a very hard anniversary to take.
Even though it has been 20 years for my Mom, sometimes it gets better but then there are times, like when I am in a valley, or Christmas fudge/candy/cookie making time that I miss her so much. As I only have one biological child myself, I can only try to bring myself to the pain you are going through. She isn't with me this year which is a blessing in disguise. I wouldn't want her to live the way I have had to live, UI and no job opportunities, living on nothing. So I am grateful she is with my father this year and will enjoy her last 2 years of high school.
I definately will keep you in prayer my dear sweet friend.
