19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. The story of a almost righteous rich young ruler. The conversation with Jesus uncovers a young man that loved God and honored his father and his mother. He did not steal had not killed anyone, nor was he a liar. This young man honored the sabbath day, by today's standards in most churches would have qualified to be a deacon or elder. The young man was confident that his life was everything that God expected. Jesus acknowledges that this almost righteous young man is doing all the right things in keeping the commandments, yet there was something lacking in this almost righteous young ruler. Jesus instructs this young ruler to invest in his eternal reward and that would involve giving up his riches to the poor and following Jesus. But when the rich young ruler heard this, he went away sorrowful. Serving Jesus is all or nothing, the almost righteousness will not inherit the kingdom of Heaven. Note the last part of that passage of scripture, for his great possessions had him. Where your heart is, there your god will be also. This young ruler had to chose between his possession or a righteous experience with God and the possessions won out. Again, What's in your wallet? Is there enough to keep you out of heaven? |
