| Psalm 3 - Do you have enemies? |
|
| |
3:1 LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many [are] they that rise up against me. 3:2 Many [there be] which say of my soul, [There is] no help for him in God. Selah. 3:3 But thou, O LORD, [art] a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. 3:4 I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. 3:5 I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. 3:6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set [themselves] against me round about. 3:7 Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies [upon] the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. 3:8 Salvation [belongeth] unto the LORD: thy blessing [is] upon thy people. Selah. Certainly David understood difficulty and knew exactly what it meant to have enemies. Betrayed even by his own son, David experienced immense sorrow and loneliness at times in his life. Even when the entire kingdom rose against him, David demonstrated that he was no people pleaser! Where was his focus? The LORD! Notice - The Lord, who is a shield and the lifter of his head and the one who sustains him - HIS LORD and HIS GOD! Ultimately God is David's glory not man. Unlike David, I do not have thousands of enemies. However, I am constantly tempted to want to please people and be liked. The Holy Spirit teaches me through this Psalm that I am to fear and treasure God and that He is my shield. I should not spend a single moment fretting, worrying, or anxious over what men say or what men do to me within or without the church. Like David, my God will answer and will sustain me and in the end will accomplish His work of salvation in my life. God help me to focus all my trust on you and your great promises. You will work all things for my good and your glory - even pain, suffering, loss and tribulation. Help me to cease fearing people and live in fear of you. |

3:1 There are several people that will attempt to bring you down. 3:2 They say that God is not the answer. 3:3 The Lord gives me strength to fight any battle. 3:4 God listens to me.. 3:5 God sustained me. 3:6 I will not be scared of men regardless of how many there are. 3:7 I have asked the Lord to help me when it comes to enemies. 3:8 Only God can save you. Man cannot save you. He will bless those who have even went against Him. |

| This psalm cries out to me how much I need to fear the Lord. Sometimes I get so caught up in trying to please people when the reality is I live for God. Not man. Man can not save me- only God. There are many times in school that I have been made fun of for my faith- or questioned about my faith- and God gave me the strength to fight it, as he will for any battle! The Lord is a shield, and the lifter of my head. I pray that I will put my focus in God, and I fear the Lord, not man. |

Verse 5 caught my attention. . . (5) I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.
How often I take for grantite such seemingly little things! The Lord sustains us!! The only reason I am living and breathing and awaking from my sleep is because God is keeping my body working well enough for me to live and He is protecting me from danger. This verse reminded me how truly dependant I am upon the Lord. He is the Creator and the Sustainer. I am so thankful that our God is a relational God and that He didn't just create the universe, then walk away as some people believe. He is a very present help in our time of need. He is our glory!! And the lifter of our head! |

| what can I say... God breaks teeth (V.7)! We do not fight man, for we know their end and our fight is to be geared toward sin, not man. (Ephesians 6:12) Rather we are to share truth with all men, even those who we may fear in hostility. Our fear should be only in the Almighty as we know he is most powerful and we are most unworthy and the great news is... is that as he sits, crowned from His holy hill and great power, he hears our cries and will sustain us even in our unworthiness! What a King we serve! |

This Psalm to me really convicts me of those times where we're afraid to stand up for Christ for fear that someone might be offended or for fear that they won't like the truth of the Gospel. David had his own kingdom rise up against him, and he still stood for the LORD. How many times will we have tens of thousands of enemies against us? Probably never. We need to be confident that God is Sovereign and is our shield, our glory, the lifter of our head as it states in V.3. As Paul said in Galatians 1:10, "Am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ." |

If we stop to consider that our enemies are not of flesh and blood but of principalities and powers of the air, it really puts everything into perspective. David totally got this. Most of the time when he's crying out to God for "his" enemies to be silenced it holds a double meaning. David is also crying out for God to smite His enemies. |
