| Salvation -- Like Riding An Elevator |
|
| |
2:21 And it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' I picture salation like riding an elevator. Using that metaphor today's verse could read: "Whoever rides an elevator will get to the top floor of a building." Now that statement is true, but it is true conditionally. The rider must keep riding until he/she arrives at the top floor.
Jesus put it this way. "He who endures to the end shall be saved." Jesus also said that we must "abide." Paul says that we must not "fall away."
In other words, we must stay on the elevator of salvation through out our life. To step on to an elevator, or to merely ride one part of the way up, does not get a person to the top.
Salvation is not a mere experience. It is a condition of being saved -- a lifestyle. "You shall know them by their fruits (lifestyle)." To call on the Lord once and then ignore Him does not a salvation make. That is like saying: "Whoever calls on her mom is a good daughter." However, if she calls on her mom once in 40 years and ignores her mom the rest of the time, does that a good daughter make? Of course not.
Calling on the Lord is a moment by moment seeking of God. "Every hour I need Thee." Salvation makes a person hunger and thirst and call on God continually. |

[star!] | Well Praise the Name of Jesus...You get a thousands stars for this one my friend....Unfortunately too many people think that once they say a sinners prayer...they are saved for life....no works...do nothing...just waltz through life, and think they shall end up in heaven...not so....we must work out our salvation daily with fear and trembling....and obey Gods Laws and Commandments...It is indeed a lifestyle....It is a relationship of obedience with the Lord every day until He comes ;o) |

[star!] | Amen, I once gave an illustration of a ship called salvation and that you didn't actually "have" salvation until you reached your destination, so i am in agreement with you. Keep them coming! |

[star!] | I'm inclined to believe that once you have it, you have it for good. Rather than "losing" one's salvation, those who don't bear fruit were never saved to begin with. More concerning are those who bear fruit for a time, then appear to "fall away." I don't presume to have all the answers, but I have read enough to convince me that salvation is possessed now (Eph 1:3, Col 3:3, etc.) and cannot be turned on/off/on/off depending on how hard we "try to be good" (Gal 3:2-3). (and as Forrest Gump said, that's all I'm gonna say 'bout that!) |

6:4 For [it is] impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 6:5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6:6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put [him] to an open shame.
A little food for thought ;o) |

| That's one of those verses that can get a person in trouble if he/she takes it out of context. We have to eat "the whole Passover lamb," can't just pick and choose the parts we like. I like the elevator simile. Thanks for sharing. |

| I am inclined to believe as expressed by Mike-n-Laura above. Does not the scripture say that "He who began a good work in you will complete it"? I trust in God to finish the good work He began in me. Great blog, Steve. |

| Brother Steve, Sounds to me like there's some conditions that go along with being saved. The concept of having eternal life without enduring or bearing good fruit is very foreign to some believers. Charles Stanley and John McAuthor teach that once you've made a confession of faith, there's no way to lose out with God. I believe that believing can change, one place Paul's praising the faithfulness of Demas and later Paul says Demas has forsaken me having a love of this present world. |

| I agree, Praise Temple. If a sports fan had as little excitement for their team as a great many Christians have for God, no one would believe they are true fans. |

It also says that Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith, It also says that whoom the Father has placed in his hand, no one can take away, So is it really you? I think not. It says God's Goodness and Kindness brings us to a place of "repentence". So it is not us.
Was the prodigal son never a son? There is no evidence of that, any more than your own children not being your child based on their performance. Did the father answer the prodigal son when he told him he had sinned against heaven and him? Nope. He said get the fatted calf, a robe and a ring. Never said do not do that again. He was already forgiven when he left in the first place. |

| If we go even further, why was the old covenent replaced? It was imperfect in the first place. Jer 31:31-34 Hebrews 8:13 Hebrews 7 Galatians 3 |

| William: The prodigal had a broken relationship with his father by his own choice of leaving and rebellion. As believers, we also can walk away from God just like the prodigal walked away from his father. It was fortunate that the son repented and returned. Had he not repented and returned he would have died in a condition of broken relationship with his father. Same for us. |
