As I think of this question in preparation for the Lord's Supper tonight, I think of Colossians 1: 13-14, 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son: 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins: The word "delivered" can literally be rendered "rescued." People say they "got saved" like it's some kind of event where they did something. Usually it means they said the prayer or had a religious experience or "free WILLFULLY" came to Jesus. Yet, Paul described the Gospel as God's rescue plan - whereby God rescued us from the powers of darkness. I mean it's a real life superhero story. Yet, oddly we had joined forces with the villain. Through His marvelous grace, He moved us from the evil side to the good side - transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son. He went into enemy territory through the incarnation (God became man) and God in Christ rescued from the camp of the enemy where we dwelt by rebellion. He made us to lay down our arms of resistance and we surrendered. That's one rescue! He rescued His enemies from being his enemies. HAHA That's so awesome! The results of this Gospel rescue plan were redemption through the blood Jesus shed whereby He paid for our sins (He died for His enemies) and then forgiveness that He has granted us for rebelling against His rule and disobeying His divine law. When the Spirit reveals that to the heart of the rebel, the heart melts and a sinner is rescued. Wow! I am so grateful for the Gospel! |
