| Psalm 8 - How Majestic is Your Name |
|
| |
8:1 O LORD our Lord, how excellent [is] thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. 8:3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all [things] under his feet: 8:7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, [and whatsoever] passeth through the paths of the seas. 8:9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent [is] thy name in all the earth! The name of the LORD is majestic - the most glorious name in all the earth. Notice the way the Psalter declares the name - He uses the covenantal name (LORD or Yahweh) referring to the personal nature of our God and then He uses the "Lord" meaning Sovereign One. Why do we struggle exulting in this name? His name is glorious because He indeed is in control of everything. With all the obsession Christians have with defending the free will of man, it is pretty clear that the one truth we should rejoice in is that God indeed is Sovereign - all-power, all-wisdom, all-glory belong to Him. I hvae nothing to boast or be prideful of - not my works, my free will (which is not totally free at all) or my wisdom. The Psalmist is telling us to pay attention to Creation beginning in verse 1... God has set His glory over all the earth (vs. 1). God is the God who is there - out there and you can see everything pointing to His existence. His glory is above the Heavens and to see this we must be loking out there! He is so much greater than us. Not an admission we really want to make! The evidence is both clear and humbling. See the heavens - the burning sun, the blazing stars - the gowign moon - see it? see it? You must! It ignites the question in verse 4 - who are we? When I see all that is the work of His fingers I see my own creatureliness. How can I glory in my own significance. It makes all my idols look foolish and futile it makes me wonder why I have not been more thankful and less consumed with people and what they think of me - and stuff. |

It amazes me. Our God is so great that even His name is the most excellent in all the earth!! (v.1) I cannot even begin to comprehend how glorious and awesome our Creator God is! And when I look at the sun, moon and stars, it really does make me ask myself who am I that the LORD, who created this huge universe in all its complexity, is mindful of me and would care to plan out every single detail of my life?? I am so small and insignificant to all that He has created and all that He is. His glory shines forth even through this fallen, sinful, and decaying world. As you said, Pastor, it does make all my idols look ridiculous and very foolish indeed!! After reading a Psalm like this, my response can only be that of worship and great thankfulness. God has blessed me with much more than I deserve and is mindful of me even though He is so great and glorious! |

| God created this dynamic universe. Who am I, just a speck, but yet God carefully molded me in addition to all other creation? How can you not say that our God created this? |
