I always hate it when someone just wants to vent and everyone gang's up on them and offers advice to them when they already know better and are made to feel like a "newbie" for venting something they did wrong or something they just needed to confess about.... sometimes you just want to share and be listened to... This acrostic was introduced to me last week and it's pretty good...This is very helpful to remember when trying to support someone in a group setting. W Willing Is the person ready to hear the advice? If a person asks, "What should I do," and waits and listens, he/sh is willing. But, if a person responds to suggestions by saying, "Yes, but....," he/she is not yet willing. I Informed Before giving advice, be sure of all of the facts. What has the person already tried? S Success Is your advice something you have tried and been successful with, or practiced and learned? E Empathy Does the advice show a strong understanding for the member's feelings? Please use WISE Advice when you are commenting in a group or blog setting!!!! You might discourage someone from sharing in the future.... |
