| Real greatness (not what we think?) |
|
| |
11:11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. This verse has always baffled me. Until this Sunday, when the pastor of the church we visited explained what was revealed to him.
Jesus proclaimed John greater than any man ever born, including, specifically, Israel’s mighty prophets of old (Jeremiah, Isaiah, etc.). John was greater because, although past prophets pointed to Jesus figuratively, John had the awesome privilege of pointing to Jesus literally, crying out, "Look there! The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"
Yet the very least in the kingdom of heaven, including the struggling Christian battling doubts and temptations, is even greater than John the Baptist. How can this be??? Because the least Christians can point to the full, finished work of Christ, including his substitutionary death, resurrection, and ascension. The ability to clearly and unambiguously point to Christ is what constitutes the real greatness of a person!!
How clearly do we point to Christ? Do others see Jesus when they look at us?

Thanks for bringing this verse out to us ..John was suppose to make the road clear for Christ to come...and when he came He did baptised him.... i think this analogy can be seen when driving ..u only drive fast when u see how far the road is clear...., especially at night here in africa...since most places there do not street lights..... , so my point here..we need to take advantage of the times and the things we see..., glad that we can see the true picture of our Lord Jesus Christ... i guess more will be needed of us...i wish i can read more into this verse..i loved ti so much |

Good blog Mike...Even considering the fact that Jesus and John the Baptist both were Israelites, the message is clear....The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the focus of the gospel...It's all about the Cross...Then of course, after we come under the blood of Christ....we must *learn* how to walk therein ;o) |

Yeah, lots to wonder about...and those type of verses tend to be a stumbling block to us when we lean on our own understanding. We'll then call them a "contradiction." They are a contradicton...to us...not to the Spirit of God who was speaking through the man. :-D A little humbling ourselves before God will save us from all kinds of frustration. :-) EH? Best regards, Craig |

Awesome, isn't it? Thanks for reading and enjoying! =) Craig, occasionally I'll research such verses in a couple of different commentaries if I want to know badly enough. There are often differing but similar conclusions, which helps. I appreciate the honesty of those who analyze different views, weighing the strengths/weaknesses of each view, and especially those who admit the weakness of their own view! I might add, what a PRIVILEGE it is to point to CHRIST!! |

ps... I might also add, to tie this blog in w/my previous blog, even the Law points to Christ, though in similar fashion as the prophets, not to his full finished work (the Law points to our NEED of something we weren't born with). 3:24 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Could we say then that the least Christians are even greater than the Law? |

Could we say then that the least Christians are even greater than the Law? Absolutely! And for the same reasons. :-) Let's not worship the tutor but the object of the tutor's lesson! ;-) We might well also say, the tutor was made for man, not man for the tutor. :-D Love you Mike! Craig |
