| No Place for Weeds! |

In his Care of the Heart (ODB April 24, 2007), David C. McCasland tells the story of how his father-in-law transformed a rocky, barren hilltop in Texas into a beautiful home site with a shaded green lawn: “After removing thousands of rocks, he added topsoil, planted trees and grass, and kept it watered.” Most believers can relate to this experience. We were once like the abandoned rocky hilltop. Then grace and salvation came. The word of God pierced through our hardened, roughened hearts and brought forth the gems of kindness, righteousness, endurance, patience, humility and selfless service. We came alive; we became new creatures in Christ. Unfortunately, McCasland’s father-in-law died and so died the care of the greenish lawn. “Today when I visit and work around that house…the invading thistles, thorns, and weeds”, have taken over, he says. How we need to care for our hearts and keep the weeds of sin from taking over. Spiritual laziness, prayerlessness, lethargy, uncared attitude and lack of watchfulness are vehicles sin ride into the life of unsuspecting pilgrims. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little carelessness, a little folding of the arm, the weary believer unwittingly becomes a spokesman for worldliness and worldly adornment. WATCH AND PRAY, Jesus told the disciples. Watch and pray I say also unto you. Don’t be like the neglected yard, or perhaps the field and vineyard described in Proverbs 24:30-34 (overgrown with thorns, covered with nettles, its stone wall broken down). Where repentance is needed, don’t delay. Through repentance and bitter tears, Peter regained his lost conviction and status in the kingdom. Today is the acceptable day to return to the shepherd of your soul. |
