Lookin' for fellowship

2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers. 2:43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 2:45 and they sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all, according as any man had need. I'm finding one thing to be true concerning the Christian walk and that's I won't get far by myself. I'm not much for church hopping and I'm used to the type of fellowship I've found in NA in that I've always made room for the next addict trying to get clean as I thought it was essential for my own recovery from addiction.
I'm a 50 year old single male with no family to speak of and I'm aware of the fact that as much as I like time to pray & time to soak in the word. to much time alone can have a negative effect.
I'm also aware that I don't really know that much about being a Christian. I've read the Bible from cover to cover in many translations. But I'm thinking I need to be open minded and just plain seek instruction. We have a 24 hour prayer chapel that's open occasionally it's run by Harvest Prayer Ministries.
I'm feeling more and more that the spirit is trying to move me away from NA with there insistence that any old higher power will do and that I'm to seek fellowship with fellow believers.
It seems thou that many of the Christians are content to be Christians on sunday and then get back to there regularly scheduled life on Monday. This may be the norm I dont know I've checked out quite a few different churches.
Personally I've gotten use to seeking God on a save my tail basis. For some reason I'm expecting a big influx of people who have had it with doing life there own way. My big question is after a sinner like me has admited that we are sinners, and accepted Christ what next? Am I just being needy?
My homw church just opened a little prayer room at our church and we had people praying in it from 6:00PM friday to 6:00PM saturday. I did get a chance at least to admit to some of the other guys that I don't really know much about being a Christian. hopefully that's a start.
Oh well on the brighter side tomorows Sunday and the search continues. Of course on the brighter side it has been over a month since I smoked a cigarette. It does feel good to be free of yet another addiction.
Love,
Dave

Dave, I continue to pray for and celebrate with you. I hope you find a church to call home, we all need a body of believers to surround ourselves with, fellowship with, and generally partner in the Christian life. The 24/7 Christian life, as in Sun thru Sat. I know many Christians don't carry their Christianity out much farther than Sunday, that's sad. One key word to maybe look for in a church is "small groups", or cell groups, or house church, etc. The church that is intentional about relationships is a good one, IMHO. (As long as they don't have any wacky theology going on there!) ~mike

Dave, everyday we all have to pick up our cross and follow Him. Thanks for sharing some of your walk. I will be praying for your decisions.

Thanks for the comments it's probably as simple as willingness to step out of my comfort zone.

Let's see, fighting addiction, stopping smoking, praying for the people in hte projects ! Wow, I wish my comfort zone was as wide as yours ! Praying for you brother. By the way, you also might want to start praying about areas of spiritual warfare, I know TH's history, it used to be a major center for witchcraft in the '70's. Try the following link for a balanced approach to the subject. Chip Ingram has a good handle on it, and even though my background is a bit more radical, he's found some good stuff. http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/living_on_the_edge/

Dennis, I don't remember recommending that one to you! :) (Oneplace is a great place to start though for podcasts) God is Good. All the Time... And all the time God is good. God loves us even though we aren't perfect. |
