| Thinking About the Importance of the Bible |

3:16 Every scripture inspired of God `is' also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. 3:17 That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work. Yesterday I told the congregation that I serve as pastor that the number one plague facing the church today may be biblical illiteracy. Everyone seems to want to know "God's will for them" but it seems that the number of professing Christians in America that have a relationship with their Bibles is declining more and more each year. Do I believe that God still speaks to His children? Yes, I do. But He primarily does this through the written pages of His Word. Do you want to hear God's voice? Do you want to know for sure what God's will is? Do you want to be close to God? Read your Bible. Study your Bible. Pray through your Bible. |

I don't want a relationship with my Bible. I want a relationship with Jesus. Hopefully this is what you really meant.
The Bible is God's written word to His people for the purpose of explaining who He is, who we are, and the nature of the relationship between them. But people can come to God through Christ who are blind, illiterate, and unable to read for any number of reasons.
In the book of Rev Christ said, "Depart from me, for I never knew you." In everything that we say and do, building relationships with Christ MUST be our purpose. |

Just came across this one:
I think this makes the case for knowing God first, then studying Scripture to better understand.
John 5:37And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39You diligently study[c] the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life. |

Gene,
um, methinks you are a little to critical. yes, people who cannot read can come to Christ, but what does Romans 10 say, it is only by hearing the Word of God. Someone has to proclaim Christ through the Word. Saying "I don't want a relationship with my Bible I want a relationship with Jesus" is like a husband saying, "I don't want to talk with my wife, I want a relationship with her." |

| I am reminded why I stay off of mychurch. We Christians seem more concerned about nit picking about words than sharing the person of Jesus. Gene, to use your own words, I'm sure this is what you meant. I'm sure you didn't mean to be so picky about the word relationship. |

[star!] | Well Brother Scott...You've certainly said a mouthful here, and the plain ole truth just needs to be told....Everything we need is contained in the Word of God....THE BIBLE...every answer to every question, and every solution to every problem....Keep proclaiming it my friend...And may it provoke Gods People to open the book ;o) |

[star!] | You can't know God's Will unless you know His Ways and you can't know His Ways unless you know His Word. We definitely are theologically challenged in these times but ppl, I think, are beginning to get back to His Word...we'd sure better! |
