David was a runner. He was stalked through the wilderness by his former mentor, Saul, who desired to kill him. He was later pursued by his own son Absalom who desired his crown. David was also sometimes the aggressor--he ran after the Philistines and the Amalekites, the enemies of God and his people. Most of all, David chased after God. He knew that God was God of the wilderness as well as God of the temple.
"O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water."
[Still]
"I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands."
Though in the wilderness David suffered hunger, thirst and great weariness, he remembered where his provision could be found:
"My soul will be satisfied as with the richest foods; with singing my mouth will praise you. On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me."
Because he was sure of God's love for him, even after his great failures, David was confident of victory over his enemies, both in the body and in the spirit:
"They who seek my life will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth. They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals. But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God's name will praise him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced" (Psalm 63)
Don't know why I'm thinking of this song today, but whether you're in the temple or the wilderness, running or resting, remember the old revival chorus, rewritten (forgive me) perhaps as David would have sung it:
"He's God in the desert,
He's God at the spring,
He's God in the temple,
He's God of everything (and I know),
God is God, and God don't ever change,
God is God, and He always will be God."
63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness of Judah. O God, thou art my God, I seek thee, my soul thirsts for thee; my flesh faints for thee, as in a dry and weary land where no water is.
