| Car Dealers, New vs. Used, Trade In Value, Financing... |
|
| |
For the past month at least, my husband and I have been searching for a new vehicle to replace one that has almost 200,000 miles on it...yes, I put in the right number of zero's.
I have met a number of salesmen, who desperately wanted us to buy right then and there, and drive the vehicle home on the same day. They wanted to know "what would make us drive the new vehicle off the lot today". Quite often, they wouldn't have been able to give us what we wanted anyway, so why do they ask? I mean, they won't just give me the vehicle, right? (Which is what I would want!) Anyway, my husband and I are not people who make a snap decision. We have to think about it and mull it over...and we have been mulling over the buying of a new car for a while now.
No one wanted to give us much for the old car. Not that I can blame them. I actually would have considered giving it to them just so I didn't have to dispose of it. I guess in the end, that was practically what we did, but I won't complain. It was in pretty sad shape, although it did still run.
We had considered going with a used vehicle, to better fit our finances, however, when we found out that we could get 0% financing on certain models we decided to buy a 2007...and the one we eventually decided on actually has a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty, so we really got a great deal.
Most of all I am just glad to have it over with. I am tired of dealing with everyone wanting to make us happy, and trying to compete for our business. I know that is a part of life, and I guess we as Christians do that too, wanting to make visitors to our church happy. Each church wants to get more people to attend their church, so we offer more incentives, like youth group, or choirs, or drama, or child care, and on and on and on, something for everyone. When what really matters is that someone can find a church they can truly call home. And hopefully, when someone attends our church, they are not put off or offended enough to stop going to church altogether. Like a few of the salesmen we met, and couldn't wait to get away from, we should not be so annoying that we make visitors run to get away! Our goal should be to reach out to people in love, and show the love of Christ in all ways.
The next time you see a visitor to your church, make sure you make them feel welcome, and not like running the other way. Some of those salesmen that we met, were overbearing and pushy. That is not the way we should be when we are working for Christ. |

| Thanks Deb. I just spoke with our senior pastor last evening about church growth and "success", and I think he has a pretty spiritually healthy view. He indicated that numbes aren't the only way to measure a church's success, so that isn't our primary focus. He is also committed to preaching the Gospel of salvation every week, not to water down our service but to be faithful to Christ and share the good news (we never know when a visitor might come needing it). Good blog, interesting point about the risks of us getting pushing! ~mike |

Good point Mike. I think it is more important to just preach the word of God, show His love, and not be concerned about numbers. Of course, if you are losing members, then it is time to be concerned and try to figure out why. |
