We could once again debate government and laws here, but I really think there is more intended. Not leaving all law and government out, the verse can also be applied to teachers, bosses, church pastors and councils, parents and elders. There are God-given authorities on many levels appointed for our growth and development in the natural and in the spirit. To learn and glean from their wisdom, and to cooperate with them as we work toward a goal is very much beneficial to us all.
I like the CEV: "Remind your people to obey the rulers and authorities and not to be rebellious. They must always be ready to do something helpful and not say cruel things or argue. They should be gentle and kind to everyone. We used to be stupid, disobedient, and foolish, as well as slaves of all sorts of desires and pleasures. We were evil and jealous. Everyone hated us and we hated everyone.
God our Savior showed us how good and kind He is. He saved us because of His mercy, and not because of any good things we have done. God washed us by the power of the Holy Spirit. He gave us new birth and a fresh beginning. God sent Jesus Christ our Savior to give us His Spirit. He made us acceptable to God and gave us the hope of eternal life.
This message is certainly true. These teachings are useful and helpful for everyone . I want you to insist that the people follow them, so that all who have faith in God will be sure to do good deeds. But don't have anything to do with stupid arguments about ancestors. And stay away from disagreements and quarrels about the Law of Moses. Such arguments are useless and senseless" (Titus 3:1-9).
Jealousy and petty arguments about anything are worthless. They cause nothing but problems in the work place, the classroom, the church, the home. We need to prayerfully allow the Spirit to lead us, and then bring our Jesus-game on. We may not always like what our authorities and superiors do, but we are there for a purpose--to be helpful, gentle and kind, just like Jesus. If it's an uncomfortable situation, if I disagree with my authority, perhaps I'm there to set an example or to pray or to learn a lesson. Maybe God is working a change in me; maybe God is working a change in them. Whatever God has in mind, we know that His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
Lord, please help me to cease all anger, jealousy, and argument. Help me to be a useful vessel in Your Hands. And thank You so much, Lord, that You have placed me under authority of godly men and women who love and serve You. I realize what a blessing that is. May I be spurred on to be more effective in the Kingdom. Amen
