| A better way to correct someone |
|
| |
(from notes I took on the sermon today...) 18:25 He (Apollos) had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. Apollos, a Jew, was "a native of Alexandria.....a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures." And yet, he knew ONLY the baptism of John (the Baptist). His knowledge about Jesus was incomplete. He only knew half the truth!! 18:26 When Priscilla and Aquila heard him (Apollos), they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. Priscilla and Aquila, a married Christian couple taught by Paul, had certainly heard Apollos speaking fervently about Jesus in public, yet his message was seriously lacking. I was struck by their approach in seeking to correct his message. They invited him to their home!! They dealt with him privately, sensitively, lovingly. a) They did not go around warning others and speading the word that Apollos was a false teacher. b) They did not publicly correct him, and therefore humiliate him in front of others. c) They did not rebuke him or argue with him. 18:28 For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ. The end result was not a bitter or disillusioned man, offended by arrogant, misguided Christians. Nor did the end result include bystanders or cynics turned off by Christians arguing in public. Instead, Apollos, having received correction in a humble and gentle manner, proceeded to proclaim the true gospel with more fervor and effectiveness than ever. Praise God! It seems that a pure desire to offer correction is actually a genuine desire to see God having his way with a person's life, not our way. There appeared to be a lovely absence of pride in Priscilla's/Aquila's approach, and God had his way with Apollos. Is this an example we can follow? |

[star!] | Yes Mike, I'm glad I was at Calvary this morning to hear this message also. It is an example we can all follow, God having His way is us doing things in a loving way and that's what Priscilla and Aquila showed Apoppols when then privately invited him to their home. I also like when the speaker talked about married couples working together in Ministry instead of seperate when they can. I really enjoyed todays service. |

[star!] | Excellent! My man, excellent. There is definitly some humility in there with a lot of love and respect. That is a proper way to instruct that doesn't 'judge' a person but only corrects (maybe completes) what is in that person's heart to do, which is to testify to the truth of our Lord. How's that? Did I get it or what? I dunno, works for me. |

Preston, I would like to think that my heart is similar to yours. Amen. No one does, Crystal. That's one reason public correction usually incites argument, and is generally not helpful. We talk about the pride of the one who doesn't accept such correction. I've always thought the bigger pride issue is in the ones who seek to do the "correcting". Amen MarJay...the Holy Spirit's guidance is to be discerned and followed. Good point, TM. Priscilla/Aquila treated Apollos w/dignity and respect. It's always a shame when we fall short of that example. I've fallen short myself a few times, unfortunately. |

Hi Mike n Laura ~ Your blog is blessed. Just to give a little bit of balance to the equation, I have noted just a few (tip of the iceberg) Holy Scriptures to show some of the Technique of some of the Most Holy People ever to live. Here is the method used by them in writing and preaching:
John The Baptist: 7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Jesus: 66Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
Jesus: Mark 7:27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
Jesus: 44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
St. Peter: Acts 8:20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
Stephen: 51Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
St. James: 1Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. 3Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire.
St. Paul: 19Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: 20Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. Jude 1:12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;...8Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh,... 13Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Mike, when I was in the childrens ministry, teaching kids to treat one another the way God tells us to,... Once in a while they would read the way Jesus spoke to some people and say, "see, it's ok to say that". We always had to go back to the verses (too many to list here) that tell us how to deal with each other.
One thing I said on a number of ocassions, was that Jesus was not a "do what I say, NOT what I do kinda of teacher", ALTHOUGH HE COULD BE,... But what we have to consider is that, If you knew your father was the devil (and many are ok with that), Jesus' words were probably not that harsh! Amen? But the fack of the matter is that He does tell us how to treat each other. I seem drawn to this one lately.
Gal 5:7. You were running the race nobly. Who has interfered in (hindered and stopped you from) your heeding and following the Truth?
8. This [evil] persuasion is not from Him Who called you [Who invited you to freedom in Christ].
9. A little leaven (a slight inclination to error, or a few false teachers) leavens the whole lump [it perverts the whole conception of faith or misleads the whole church].
10. [For my part] I have confidence [toward you] in the Lord that you will take no contrary view of the matter but will come to think with me. But he who is unsettling you, whoever he is, will have to bear the penalty.
11. But, brethren, if I still preach circumcision [as some accuse me of doing, as necessary to salvation], why am I still suffering persecution? In that case the cross has ceased to be a stumbling block and is made meaningless (done away).
12. I wish those who unsettle and confuse you would [go all the way and] cut themselves off!
13. For you, brethren, were [indeed] called to freedom; only [do not let your] freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or excuse [for selfishness], but through love you should serve one another.
14. For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is complied with in the one precept, You shall love your neighbor as [you do] yourself.
15. But if you bite and devour one another [in partisan strife], be careful that you [and your whole fellowship] are not consumed by one another.
16. But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God).
17. For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do.
Did not mean to take up this much of your blog. It is a good blog! |

Stu....great point. Priscilla/Aquila were a WONDERFUL example of a married couple ministering together, jointly. I too hope Laura and I can be so mature and harmonious in our testimony and ministry. There is a sweetness and wholesomeness to communication borne out of humility and love. When I see it I recognize it and give praises to our heavenly Father, from whom the gift of pure communication comes. Thanks Glenn, I yearn for that too! Preston, your wisdom is refreshing and welcome. :) |

| God yearns to bless you, and to prosper you, and to prosper your work, as you preach and teach his righteousness. Focus on God's righteousness and find your blessing. Man has no power over his circumstances as God directs everything concerning him. By grace (not choice) the heathen is what he is; and all are heathen: servants unto the beast by divine design. Seek freedom, and find holiness; yet at the appointed time of God drawing you. |

[star!] | Excellent Brother Mike! I have preached on this just a few times over the years and it impressed me that this is genuine discipleship... Amen! Also, Apollos really had to submit this this Husband & Wife team (and you might wonder, especially in those days, how he felt about teachings and instructions from a woman... I love this portion of scripture and appreciate the fact that this husband and wife desired to take this man deeper and passionately into the scriptures and the things of God... They opened up their hearts, knowledge, and home to Apollos... I wonder if we have any more like this in our churches today Mike??? Thanks Mike for sharing this... Special blessing for me! Blessings In Him... :o) Herman |

| Thanks Herman, and great point -- Apollos played a part too! He needed to submit for any actual correction to occur. Those who have a word from the Lord must INSURE that they have a willing listener before passing along their words of guidance, instruction, correction, etc. Why would we talk down to someone, treat them disrespectfully, and then claim that we're speaking for the Lord??? Priscilla/Aquila's approach virtually INSURED that they would have a willing listener in Apollos. Their example was truly a gift to us from God. Great comment, brother. |
