91:14 Because he cleaves to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. What does it mean to "cleave to God in love"? I found these definitions of cleave: "to adhere firmly and closely or loyally and unwaveringly," "to come in close contact with," "to stick together and resist separation," "to be faithful to," and "to cling, adhere, or stick fast to something."
Examples of cleaving would be a dress that sticks to a woman's leg; or a static electricity filled baloon that sticks to a wall. Here is a Biblical example of cleaving: "Then Orpah kissed here mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth cleaved to her." Orpah kissed and then felt like she had to leave, but Ruth choose to cleave in love. Ruth faithfully and unwaveringly stuck with Naomi. Through thick and thin, Ruth resisted separation from Naomi.
Jesus said that we must abide in Him. To abide is to cleave. Jesus said: "If anyone does not abide in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers." However, God will deliver and protect the person who cleaves to Him in love.
