I was re-studying this a month ago, and what kept coming up was what I was taught from childhood. That repentance is turning from and quit doing sin. But while getting into the study I found that this is not what the bible says.
Repentance is this:
metanoeō
met-an-o-eh'-o
From noieō; to think differently or afterwards, that is, reconsider (morally to feel compunction): - repent.
noieō
noy-eh'-o
From nous; to exercise the mind (observe), that is, (figuratively) to comprehend, heed: - consider, perceive, think, understand.
nous
nooce
Probably from the base of ginōskō; the intellect, that is, mind (divine or human; in thought, feeling, or will); by implication meaning: - mind, understanding. .
ginōskō
ghin-oce'-ko
A prolonged form of a primary verb; to “know” (absolutely), in a great variety of applications and with many implications (as shown at left, with others not thus clearly expressed): - allow, be aware (of), feel, (have) known (-ledge), perceive, be resolved, can speak, be sure, understand.
So according to scripture it is not turning from the sin, repentance is acknowledging that it is wrong.
Even Paul said that the things he knew he should do, he could not.
and the things that he should not do, he kept doing.
