5:27 After this he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow me." 5:28 And he left everything, and rose and followed him. No small call came from Christ: "Follow Me." Levi left it all when he rose to follow that tall call.
Christ's tall call's for all, yall -- you, me, whosoever will. We are all called to follow Jesus. Now following Jesus doesn't mean saying some statement such as, "I am a Christian." Words are sometimes shallow and meaningles.
Following Jesus doesn't mean attending religious meetings. Anybody can sit through church.
Following Jesus doesn't mean agreeing to a creed. We can do that out of our greed or upbringing or other wrong motive.
Following Jesus doesn't even mean saying the sinners prayer to receive Christ and then resting on a one time spiritual experience. The path to salvation begins with being born again, it doesn't end there.
So what's it mean to follow Jesus. Think of the children's game, follow the leader. When the leader does something, then you are supposed to do the very same thing.
We are supposed to do what Jesus did -- to live like He lived. He is our example. "Whatever He says to you, do it." "As many as are led by the Spirit are the children of God." We are to do what the Holy Spirit says for us to do.
This call is to all -- not just to clergy (whatever that is) but for laymen (an unbiblical word) and even for those who haven't heard the name, Jesus, (we need to tell them, show them, love them). Every believer is called to leave all and follow Christ's call. We have to lay down our flesh, our will, our sin, our possessions, our family, and follow Him. That is faith. Whew. And it is not easy. It takes guts. Real men and women love Jesus.
