The media these days seems to be on a campaign to make everyone feel inferior. I turned on my internet page this morning and saw right away "Diet Don'ts," "The social side of obesity," and "When to stop eating and drinking for the night." In flipping through television channels this morning in just a few moments of trying to get a weather report I passed ads and infomercials for building muscles, cleaning the colon, diet products that can be shipped to your door for less than $10 a day, cosmetics made of minerals that hide all flaws, and pills to "enhance" oneself. That seems to be the "commonwealth" we inhabit--seeking physical perfection. "For, as I have often told you before and now say again with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things" (Philippians 3:18-19).
I am so glad that I have a Lord who allows me, though doing what I can to take care of this temporal temple of the Holy Ghost, to file my citizenship in another place "whose architect and builder is God"; a place where physical perfection is not even an issue. "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body" (Phil. 3:20-21).
I'm not saying we shouldn't be good stewards of the life and breath that God has given us. I am saying that if people were as concerned with the spirit as they are with the flesh, Planet Earth would be a much better place.
Lord, help me to focus on the things that are
really important, and not to waste time, energy, and money on the things that aren't.
