3:8 He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
Are there some typos in this verse? Or does John mean what he wrote? "He who commits sin is of the devil." (And we say we believe the Bible from cover to cover.)
This is one tough verse. Ouch. We who rest in our salvation experience and continue to sin could be in trouble with this verse. It says we are of the devil. But how can that be since we have such profound doctrine and belong to such a cool church and talk about Jesus so much? Sin.
The Son of God said almost the same thing to one of His disciples. Peter had just experienced Divine revelation and said that Jesus was the Christ. Then Peter began to tell Jesus that he didn't need to die in Jerusalem.
Jesus replied to Peter: "Get thee behind me, Satan." Ouch. Later Peter denied Jesus three times. Then he repented with bitter tears and became one of the leading apostles. Maybe we need to repent.
Thank you for writing what thus says the Lord. I believe Jesus said what He means and means what He said. It is up to each individual to study the Word for themselves and apply it if they want to be blessed in every area of their lives.
I'm glad I read your blog before I wrote mine--was going to say almost the same thing--great minds . . . or have we both been talking to the same ONE? Blessings!
Amen. Lord help us to study your word. Know what it means and apply it to our lives. We can do nothing in of our selfs. For our heart is deceitful above all things.
Thanks, MarJay. It is so tempting to put our own or our denomination's twist on some Scriptures. Taking it just the way it reads is sometimes very difficult.
Brother Steve, The Bible says what it means & means what it says. John was speaking to folks alot like they are today. Do you think God would send me to hell? No, if you make your bed in Hell, you've rejected the Lord Jesus Christ. For he came to seek and to save that which is lost.
By that comment, when do you think it is to late to take God in your life and repent? for the last 18 years I have been a Sinner is it too late to repent now in your opinion?
As long as there is breath there is time to repent. However repentance doesn't just mean saying "I'm sorry." It means turning away from sinful behavior and thoughts and turning to Jesus with passion and obedience. When a person receives grace he is a new creature and begins to behave differently. A genuinely saved person can fall into a sin, but he/she doesn't live in that sin.
