1:10 Now I make request to you, my brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you will all say the same thing, and that there may be no divisions among you, so that you may be in complete agreement, in the same mind and in the same opinion.
1:11 Because it has come to my knowledge, through those of the house of Chloe, that there are divisions among you, my brothers.
1:12 That is, that some of you say, I am of Paul; some say, I am of Apollos; some say, I am of Cephas; and some say, I am Christ's.
1:13 Is there a division in Christ? was Paul nailed to the cross for you? or were you given baptism in the name of Paul?
1:14 I give praise to God that not one of you had baptism from me, but Crispus and Gaius;
1:15 So that no one may be able to say that you had baptism in my name.
1:16 And I gave baptism to the house of Stephanas; but I am not certain that any others had baptism from me.
1:17 For Christ sent me, not to give baptism, but to be a preacher of the good news: not with wise words, for fear that the cross of Christ might be made of no value.
They say that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Or to quote the Talking Heads, "...same as it ever was."
Even at a time when people who had personally known Jesus were still alive and spreading the Good News, there was a struggle between groups of people who felt their way of worship was the right way, or that their leader was more holy than the others. That struggle is alive and well today.
What is the proper way to baptize, dunking, sprinkling, or pouring? Is communion is the physical or symbolic body and blood of Christ? Should musical instruments be allowed in church? Contemporary vs. traditional worship? Is Apostolic succession necessary or Biblical? Pre or post tribulation rapture? Rapture or no rapture? The list goes on and on, but my favorite is, "My church preaches straight from the Bible!" which is always said in such a way as to insinuate all other churches must be preaching from a book of demonology or something.
I'm not here to voice my opinion on any of these topics, that's not my point. My point is that we are still sinners, one and all, and that as Christians we do have one belief that we share:
