Remember (I hope you don't) Wayne and Garth bowing down to a certain shock-rock icon in the 1992 film
Wayne's World? As they abased themselves they chanted, "We're not worthy; we're not worthy." Very representative of the world in general, I'm afraid. In this present evil age, folks more often bow to the gods of this world than the One True God who they try to discredit at every turn. But the gods of this world demand humiliation, not humility. They take and take, and when one has nothing left to give, they leave his empty shell in the dust as they move on to the next victim. They promise and promise, but what they deliver falls far short of satisfaction.
And they make us feel unworthy.
Contrast that to the message of God in Romans 5:1-11: "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into His grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through Him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation."
The truth is, we're not worthy. There is no ritual, abasement, or sacrifice that we could offer that could make us worthy; but the blood of Christ has made us worthy by reconciling us to God the Father. The gods of this world grind us into the dust. The One True God of heaven and earth "stoops down to make us great."
Thank You God, that You so loved the world that You gave Your one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Amen.
5:6 While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
