Open the Floodgates of Heaven?

There is a worship song that goes, "Let it rain...Let it rain...Open the floodgates of heaven."  I have thought a lot about that lately - especially today.  This morning, northeast Ohio got hammered by rain - some areas got as many as 5 inches in 2 hours.  Main streets of downtown Cleveland were under water.  Major hospitals has their emergency rooms flooded.  The "floodgates" were opened wide!

When we ask God to "open the floodgates of heaven" or "rain down Your Spirit" - do we want a drizzle, a steady shower, or all that He desires to give us? 

I was talking with a missionary to Africa while he was in the States for medical reasons.  He put it well, "Revival is ugly."  How many times in our churches do we pray for revival?  We tend to think of it as just an emotional buzz for Jesus.  But as this missionary asserted, revival is ugly.

The rain today caused people to make changes to their daily routine.  So will revival.  We want the emotional buzz, but are we willing to allow our lives to be changed by the outpouring of God's Spirit?  Are we willing to let go of the questionable music we listen to?  Watch less TV?  Pray more?  Spend our money differently?  Are we truly willing to let go of the sins we have loved to cherish?

Today, Cleveland was a mess!  Revival can also be messy.  Are we sure we want God to "open the floodgates of heaven?"  If we truly want an outpouring, are we willing to pay the price and make the sacrifices necessary?

If we dare, let us pray, "open the floodgates of heaven!"

I like the terminolgy of just wanting an 'emotional buzz'...I think that's why a lot of 'new age' spirituality attracts a lot of people...they want their spirituality just like their food - bite-size, readily available, no muss no fuss.  When they are done with it, there's no cleanup, there's no guilt about it, and it's there again when 'needed'.
