| Am I delivered yet? |
|
| |
1:10 “He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 1:11 as you help us by your prayers.” Isn’t that funny? Those of us who have been delivered (past), can look forward to being delivered again (future), even as God continues to deliver us now (present). LOL—how confusing!
Actually, the simplest way to read this passage, is to view the deliverance Paul mentions as a deliverance from dangerous circumstances. This “deadly peril” was a trial that threatened Paul’s life, until God delivered him. But Paul knew there would be more perilous situations in the future from which he would need deliverance. And as new circumstances arose, God would continue to deliver Paul, time and time again.
But what if a circumstance arose from which God did not deliver Paul, or us??? Does that mean God failed him/us? No. It just means God’s deliverance isn’t what we thought, or expected. The truth is, Paul was eventually martyred, beheaded in Rome. Some would say God failed Paul. But we KNOW that wasn’t the case, right? Well…right???
If we know this, then why do we still feel as though God fails us when he leaves our difficult circumstances unchanged, no matter how desperately we pray?
Wouldn’t it be a little overly simplistic to assert that God is now out of the business of delivering people, having finished his work at the cross? What did Jesus mean when he said, “It is finished,” anyway? I believe that was Christ’s cry of exhultation that his life’s work, as a human and as a Lamb, was gloriously complete. Obviously there were still more deliverances yet to accomplish. In fact, as long as there is sin in this world, there will be circumstances, illnesses, hardships, persecutions, from which people will need deliverance. And I am certain God will be right there too, hearing every supplication. How he will respond… Well, that’s up to him. The extent to which we trust… That’s up to us.
Regardless of the situation we find ourselves in, there is at least one thing I am sure. Jesus’ finished work on the cross has secured all of my deliverances, past, present, and future, whatever they may look like to me at the time.

[star!] | Good post Mike, a reminder that God is the lover of our souls. Paul's fate was little to what he had achieved in the name of Christ. By the time he was beheaded in Rome he was already a heavenly man ready for Glory. Because we are earth bound we sometimes tend to think in terms of 'the permanent' rather than our bodies being 'temporary tabernacles' That does not mean that we should lessen our bodies for they are temples of the living God and should be cared for as such. But not to be clinged to when God is calling us home. We have a better destination and a better body prepared for us by Him who loves us so much. Life is about letting go of those things that hold us back and comitting them back into the hands of our loving Father. We have been created for the Glory of God with the sole purpose to glorify Him nothing more and nothing less. |

Yep it is up to us to trust even when we don't see the answer we seek. He is faithful to deliver us and keep us in His strength and grace.
Nice pic by the way :-) It looks good on you.
peace my friend. |

[star!] | As my young friend Tiffany put in her blog not long ago, "If we're going to ask God 'why me' in the bad times, we need to also ask Him 'why me' in the good times"--we don't deserve any of the great things God has done for us. If He never did any more than die on the cross to forgive me from my sins, I got much more than I deserved. I sit here this morning with no car (don't know when it will be fixed or replaced) and no house, and a sick daughter, and a job to be responsible for, actually two jobs. My flesh wants to complain, but my spirit says, "trust God"; my Word says "I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread";and even my mind refuses to "cheer down." Not bragging on me!--I'm bragging on my Lord. He really is all I need! Thanks for the post, Mike. Nice to "see" you! |

Thank you for dropping by and sharing your thoughts, friends. :-) I would rather be delivered HIS way than mine. I'm sure I'd screw it all up, lol! Ruth, how 'bout that. The Lord "permitted" you and Scott to suffer a little longer than you would have liked. I bet some were thinking, even as Scott sat in that jail cell, that your (and his) faith just wasn't very effective. Well I for one was amazed at the faith BOTH of you exhibited, in fact I WILL NEVER FORGET the trial you guys went through. I has had a major impact on me, and will continue to cause ripples throughout my life. Just think about all the other folks that witnessed what y'all went through. You guys were strong in your faith, a shining example of faithfulness and submission....and eventually joy. God bless you both, you're my heroes! |

[star!] | Why is it when I read one of your new blogs, I'm already like wayyyy down the list?? Oh, yeah...I had to walk the dog. That's okay. I didn't miss nothing! I don't have to pile on the compliments, ya da, ya da, ya da. However it does need to be pointed out...this is a good blog. Reminds me to remember what He has done already! Would it be senseable for God to let me fall now?? After all He has Already done? Why, no! If that were the case, He wasted His time to begin with. In the Old Testiment, I read that a lot. God is Faithfull. Kind of the point here, right? Amen. |

| BTW, is that the real Mike? If so, Ricky did not do you justice. I thought you used Ricky's photo 'cause you were an ugly mutt or something. In fact, I was kind of thumping my chest thinking I wasn't the ugliest on here because you didn't even show your real picture!! LOL! Now I am reduced to thinking God needs a good laugh and I'm the punch line. |

You have a way of making things seem so simple and you know what, they are. God will never, ever forsake us but the believing starts with us. FAITH is the key to all of our circumstances, knowing that he is right there in the thick of things with us. It takes a lifetime to acquire the type of Faith that the Paul had (but he were right there with Him), however I know that this short time He has given me, I would not have survived if it had not been for Him.
No rose garden promised, but a home once this walk is finished. I think it's worth it, how about you? |

Crystal....aw shucks! hehe, as far as the song, yes it's true we are signed sealed delivered! (BUT...the song also neglects the fact that we still continue to be delivered as we live in this fallen world, and that we also await our final deliverance - from these earthly/mortal bodies!) ps...great song though! |

[star!] | I'm grateful for Deliverance also. I feel that after each trail I go through God delivers me and I learn from that experience. I have to be more patient in my trails because as I look back, God has bought me though each and every one of them. Thanks Mike his is a great post. God Bless |
