This verse makes a great point, one that modern Christianity often overlooks, and which you alluded to. Personal interpretation. Few Christians I know claim to subscribe to personal interpretations, they always say the Spirit leads them in their interpretations. But then, their interpretations contradict each other!!! (Thus we know that someone mistook their personal interpretation for the Spirit's interpretation!) In my opinion, the role of teacher appears to be discounted by many who claim to follow the Holy Spirit. Something to be careful of, if you ask me.

Todd, it is good to see you blogging, bro.

There is a conflict in what you say. Because you encourage everyone to read the Bible for themselves, which I also do, we end up with a gazillion interpretations. You are right, the Holy Scriptures are the written guide and the Holy Spirit must illuminate that to our understanding. However, what some claim as the Holy Spirit's guidance is absolute rubbish. Is there a solution? The Catholics believe that their Magisterium is the solution, but the problem with that is the absolute drivvel that has been made dogma over the centuries -- more vain rules of mere men. Another solution is to constantly compare our Protestant man-made rules to Scripture and chuck them out rather than keep them. That just does not seem to happen. We love our traditions as much as Catholics do. In the end I ask if God has a purpose in all this, from televangelism's frequent garbage teaching to the vain denominational traditions of mere men. I believe that if we learn to focus on the teachings of Christ, there is a good place of unity. Another solution would be if we just keep up an open dialog rather than lock doctrines up as silly dogmas.

Well, it would be nice if we all listened to the Holy Spirit for He guides us in all truth.  However, we don't always, nor do we always understand for the carnal mind can not understand the things of God. I can't get away from the fact though that there is but one meaning to each scripture/text.  There may be many applications but God can't tell you something and then tell me something as far as right and wrong and both be right.  For example:  If God says it is OK for you to hate your enemy but tells me that I must love my enemy something is wrong there.  But, I will tell you that I would agree with you that our unity is in Christ and His teachings.  But we must seek for clarification rather than holding on to dogmas that may not be right.

Amen!  I've asked the Lord many a time to show me what specific verses mean, when I can't figure it out.  Sometimes I ask people I consider godly, and sometimes they are right and sometimes I just can't accept what they are saying.  God does use people, but you really don't want to be deceived? Do whatcha said here.  Search the scriptures for yourself, be filled w/ and led of the Spirit who leads us into all truth.

My dearly beloved Todd:

It is written of the first and last coming, I am the way (the first), the truth (the last), and the life (the resurrection): no man reconciles unto the Father but by me. Thus you were told symbolically (hence the book of Revelation was signified when it was given) of the time of the end coming, or the manifestation of the wisdom of God: Behold, The Lion of the tribe of Judah has prevailed to open (expound) the book (of Revelation), and loose (interpret) the seven seals and seven trumpets according to God's wisdom and perspective. Therefore, Go, wash in the pool of Shiloh: for to dwell in the world to come, you must learn of God's divine wisdom and knowledge (Revelation 5: 5, 10: 7).

Let he that is without guile come and receive the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Every crooked path shall be made straight: every knee shall bow unto the divine wisdom and knowledge of God, which is to every man's benefit, (although he may not yet perceive it,) as he is drawn of the Father in heaven. Let the humble soul take heed: for the proud shall continue on in ignorance for an appointed time, preaching and treaching the first coming (partial) when the last coming (fullness) is now among them: thinking that the student (pupil) of the Teacher at his first coming can directly shed light and instruct the Teacher (IRIS) at his last coming. My beloved, This is the mystery of the last coming: the name of the Son of man; yet the first and the last are one and the same spirit.

LOVE IS LIKE A ROCK

Eternally yours!

I wish it could be true that we would all be willing to be completely led by the Holy Spirit without reservation or any purpose of evasion.  But the reality is that we all have as much of God as we are willing to accept, but nothing more.  And so we never really fully accept His forgiveness, our wounds are never really healed, our fears are never fully replaced with the courage of Christ.

It is through that combination of filters that we most often read scripture, and so we frequently have a hard time hearing the Voice of God speak to us as we read.  And so we continue to hold on to teachings we like or are at least comfortable with that, in truth, are not God's teachings.

It is that willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit into the unknown that allows us to be open to what God has to say to us in prayer and in scripture.  When we can do that, we have real faith; faith that allows us to trust His as he leads us one step at a time.

The more we can trust Him, the closer we become to Him and the more conformed to Him we become.  That's what builds real unity, and that's how sound doctrine stays sound.
