One of the continuing controversies in the Church is the current day enablings of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as presented in I Corinthians 12. One of those gifts is the prayer language, or tongues, "the utterance of a language one has not learned in response to the inspiration and motivation of the Holy Spirit" (Black, Daniel L. "Life in the Holy Spirit," Discipleship: How to Live the Christlife. Cleveland: Pathway Press, 1989.). I Thessalonians 5:19 tells us not to quench the Spirit. John 14:17 says He is looking for yeilded vessels. In prayer and intercession, I, as a human being, am not equipped in my flesh to understand all needs. God, however, knows all things and all needs. The Holy Spirit who is always in tune with the Godhead can flow through me as I yeild in prayer from my spirit to Him--my prayer language, tongues, glossolalia, whatever term you choose--and from Him to me, in perfect harmony of purpose. With my prayer language I can pray the will of God. "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will" (Romans 8:26-27); "Anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues" (I Corinthians 14:2, 13-15, 39). In 2006, Andrew Newberg did a neuroimaging study to test the activity of the brain during glossolalia. Scoffers and doubters use this study to put down the activity because the research found that during glossolalia, the emotion centers of the brain show an increase in activity while the language centers show a decrease. They supposed this to mean that glossolalia is only meaningless babble. The research, however, just confirms what the scripture says. "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful." Of course one's emotions are stirred in the presence of the Holy Spirit, so the emotion centers of the brain react. Since Newberg's equipment measured brain activity, not spirit activity, his conclusion seems pretty logical to me. Thank You, Lord for all Your gifts. Guide me to use what You have supplied for prayer and intercession for Your people, not considering myself better than anyone, but fitted for a particular service in Your Kingdom. Lord, Your assignments are exciting and miraculous. Whether our gifts are charismatic, ritualistic, academic, or any other, help all in the Body of Christ to come together in love and singularity of purpose--Your purpose, to bring as many into the Kingdom as possible before You return. Amen 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. |

| Hoped that might be the case for some who have never had a sufficient explanation, not that mine was that great. But God is great at clarifying things! This is such an area of misunderstanding in the Body of Christ. Love ya, Tiffany! |

[star!] | As I read this, I began to pray in tongues with the knowledge that it is the Holy Spirit in me praying and I began to get choked up and weeping, tears flowing like a river. The Holy Spirit in me is grieving that the gifts people were given are not being used for the good of all. That is what I heard in the Spirit. How very, very sad. Many are not hearing from the Spirit because they are not allowing the Holy Spirit to have His way with them. Jesus said five signs will follow the believer Mark 16. Speaking in a heavenly language is one of them. G-d is Spirit and His Spirit is in the believer and therefore, it stands to reason that His Spirit will pray in and through the believer so that His will can be done.
Thank you for this post my friend. Thank you. |

| Thanks, Marcia. He always does what He says He will do, Amen? Just imagine what the Church would be if everyone were operating in the gifts He has provided! |

[star!] | Bev, great post. As I was reading this I began thinking of Mike's blog on people not being fed, and I remembered that I once left a church because you could not feel the Spirit of God in the place....it was dead (powerless). If a church doesn't operate in the gifts, it is of no use to the kingdom. God uses the gifts to edify and encourage the church.......yeh and sometimes rebuke. I have been there too. Great post though. Blessings to you Beverly and thanks. |

| There are many gifts of the Spirit as He never leaves us without the things we need to become what we have been called to become. There are the nine of I Cor 12:word of wisdom, word of knowledge, discernment of spirits, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, tongues and interpretation; and there are the service gifts of Romans 12: helps, governing, serving, teaching, exhorting, giving, showing mercy; there are the ministry gifts or gifts to the church of Eph. 4: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers; and there is the "gift of grace" in I Peter 4:10. "Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." There are also aquired gifts and talents that God uses within the church. As there are numerous parts of the body, so I believe there are numerous gifts. Praise God for all of them! |

| Yes being wholly surrendered to the Holy Spirit, who is God, is of course an emotional experience, and God created emotions as one of His "good gifts". I don't think there is any one topic that evokes more false spiritual pride than the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and also causes division in th Body of Christ due to man's or private interpretation. One thing I have found, is that we cannot bring our understanding of the all-present, all knowing, all-powerful Creator and sustainer of all energy and matter and spirit and every realm that we don't even see to a place where we can box God in in the way He chooses to operate. He is sovereign and does as He pleases in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth. Another thing is that when we are praying in the spirit, we can also praise God in the Holy Spirit and sing in the Spirit, for the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets, and we are commanded to carry the prophetic message of preaching the Gospel to all Nations, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. We all need to be filled with the Holy Spirit and so consumed by Him that we overflow with His Love and light that others can't help but either run to us or run from us. Remeber that on the day of Pentecost, people thought that the disciples were drunk with wine, but they were filled with the Holy Spirit, let's get filled and take a huge drink of the Holy Ghost, and let Him have his way! Praise God! |

[star!] | This is a great post Beverly. Thanks! :-)
When I first learned about various spiritual gifts available to us, I (unfortunately) got hung up on "tongues" for a few years and kept begging God for that particular manifestation of His presence. Well, He didn't give it to me for about 10 years because I was to learn some other lessons first! But one evening when I least expected it and had no words for my English intercession, the anointing descended and a fluent language I'd never spoken before just POURED forth! Talk about surprised!
Well, that was 30 years ago and that gift, along with many others, has been a tremendous aid for both personal edification and powerful outreach. What an amazing God we serve! |
