"Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law" (Romans 13:7-8). I know a man who is consumed day and night with worry and stress because of monetary debt. He is driven always by letting "no debt remain outstanding." Noble, yes. But there is a second clause to that verse. To be so possessed by any desire, however honest, however noble, however great, that one neglects his continuing debt to love, is to disregard Christ. "So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God" (Romans 14:12). We must not ignore our debt of love. 13:8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. |
