| Mother Teresa: The Movie |
|
| |
A beautiful portrayal of one of the most caring human beings that has ever lived! Olivia Hussey does a wonderful job of playing Mother Teresa, the nun whose life was totally devoted to showing God's love and mercy to the "poorest of the poor" in the streets of Calcutta, India. This movie is a gift, a picture of what a life looks like that is given wholly to God, concerned about nothing but serving Him, and seeing His face in every person to whom she ministers. She was the personification of the gifts of mercy and humility.
After serving as a nun for 20 years, she felt God's call away from the convent and into the dangerous streets among the poor and destitute. The Church said no. "Lord, what do you want from me?" she said. "Why can't I be like other nuns?" But God made a way. Barrier after barrier throughout her life and ministry, God opened doors for her to do His work. The mark one small woman left on Calcutta, and on the entire world, was amazing! It begs a question of all of us: What does God desire to do through the lives of His children, if we would but offer ourselves as a living sacrifice to His service? No reward. No recognition. No glory. Just total obedience.
A highly recommended movie!
Available for check out from Enon's library. Available for purchase from Jacob's Well for $17.58 (retail 19.98).
6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

| Oh, Kathy - I want to see the movie. And it's another case where God was calling someone out to do something and the church said, "No, that's not the way to go" and she had to do it anyway... |

Ali, lol, why am I not surprised you like this movie?! I agree with you about actual footage though. There's no substitute for the real thing! (No goosebumps, but I watched the movie twice and cried both times!)
Bestemor, those are the toughest callings, but as history bears out, she is hardly the first, and surely not the last! Lives like hers give courage and motivation! I think you'll love the movie!
Bunny, you'll be glad! Let us know your thoughts! It challenges in so many arenas! |

| Funny you should bring this up, I just watched the old Inn of Sixth Happiness, and then did some searching for the real Gladys Aylward. hers was also a story of no, no, and no. It makes me want the confidence to say yes to God, and then move into what He's called. I'll look for this movie, also, is Amazing Grace due out on DVD soon? |

| Dennis, I had to google Gladys Aylward to see who she was, and I wasn't familiar with the movie. But now I want to see it! There have been some great missionary movies, the latest I'm aware of, being End of the Spear, which was eye-opening and thought-provoking. I'm sure Amazing Grace will be out on video soon. I've been watching for it and haven't seen it yet. Another must see! Have you seen it yet? |

Mother T was a beautiful person .She left behind her familys great wealth to help the worlds poorest. I can't imagine what that must have been like . She was confused however. What was her personal calling,.. she thought we all should do.
God calls us each differently.
I dont doubt that she is in heaven . |

Thanks, King! I agree with you that God uses us all differently. From all I know of Mother Teresa, however, I think she "got it" as much as any other person ever has. Perfect, no, but a lot closer than I!
I could relate to the scene near the end of the movie when she was in a meeting in (NY?), and she "lost it" over all the wasted money of our ilfestyles here, and our oblivion to all the need in the world. I had the same reaction when I returned from my first trip to Honduras, where we were building simple concrete block houses for families who has lost their homes to hurricane Mitch. Before the trip I had bought a painting for my living room, and when I returned I hated the painting, remembering the joy on the families' faces over having a "home beyond their wildest dreams" which cost about what my painting did. I was extravagantly decorating the walls of my secure home, while so many real people all over the world, at no fault of their own, have no walls at all. It was a sickening feeling, but (unfortunately) I reacclimated to our geocentrism here . . . In my perception Mother Teresa served God tirelessly with a passion and vision that few have ever known.
Pastor Tim, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts after you see the movie! |

You know, I think it was A&E that did a special on her shortly after her death. That aired at a time when I was seriously questioning all denominations. I had just completed a trip where a guy in the Dallas airport had a big poster proclaiming that the pope was the Anti-Christ and the Roman Catholic Church was the whore of Babylon. I read the little pamphlet and for a few moments I thought, "What if this is true?" Am I being drawn away from God? I only saw clips of the show as I did my thing around the house, but as I would stop briefly and watch, I kept thinking, "A bad tree cannot produce good fruit, and a good tree cannot produce bad fruit." That was probably the first validation point that it was OK to continue considering becoming Catholic.
Thanks for the recommendation, Kathy.

| Gene, thank you for your comments! Mother Teresa is one of my greatest heroes, and it is a shame that some have taken her private journal and attempted to void the depth of her faith. To totally give up one's own life for God, to daily see and experience what she saw and experienced, and not to have any moments of questioning, would make no sense to me at all. Those who live every day in the midst of suffering, those who live the Word in its fullness - these are the people whose faith has been tested and stretched. And if they have survived as believers, they have survived at a spiritual depth far greater than I have known. I will judge her after I have ministered in the streets of Calcutta with the number of years she gave the Indian people in God's service. |
