| Overcoming The Rejection Syndrome |
|
| |
One of the main problems I see in people as a pastor is the problem of rejection, or as some call it the rejection syndrome. Once a person experiences a deep pain of rejection and it is let unresolved, it results in the fear of being rejected again as well as feelings of the fear of not receiving approval or acceptance. Rejection will also cause feelings of worthlessness all because the person being rejected didn’t live up to someone’s expectations and was rejected. Chip Ingram sums up the cycle of rejection in five points. - The Message you hear – “You don’t measure up!
- The beliefs we embrace – I am bad, inferior, unwanted, and unworthy of love.
- The pain we feel – isolation, abandonment, self doubt, self hatred
- The games we play – We learn denial, withdraw, manipulation, we attack and pretend etc.
- The message we send – We don’t measure up!
To sum up Ingram’s cycle, the person who is has experienced rejection is left with feelings that they don’t measure up. This results in them embracing beliefs that they are inferior or unwanted. These beliefs then produce emotions of abandonment, self doubt, and self-hatred that can cause the rejected person to isolate themselves. After the pain of rejection is experienced, in order to cope, the rejected person has a tendency to live in denial or withdraw. All of this produces a message the rejected person sends to others that he or she doesn’t measure up. Furthermore, what I have noticed is that the rejection syndrome is no respecter of persons. It can be experienced by the very successful. As a matter of fact, the feelings that I don’t measure up may be the driving force behind a person’s success. However, when this happens the outcome is not favorable. For example, if someone does not feel like they measure up they may try to place worth in their performance and become a workaholic desperately attempting to create feelings of worthiness. The fallout may be a divorce, a child who experiences behavior problems or a nervous breakdown by the workaholic. It also can be experienced by those who haven’t experienced a lot of success in their lives. It is not that lack the ability, it’s because they lack the confidence to attempt goals that they might not attain. If they attempt a goal that is not attained it will prove the lie that they have believed that they really don’t measure up. I would like to briefly reflect on four points that Chip gives regarding the problem with rejection. A Definition of Rejection Charles Solomon – “Rejection is the absence of meaningful love.” Kinds of Rejection
Overt – This is verbal, emotional, and physical abuse. Covert – This is rejection that is unintentional. For instance a parent may overprotect a child that may result in the child being left with feelings of worthlessness. Impact of Rejection Behavioral Impact – We reject others like we have been rejected Emotional Impact – Feelings of worthlessness, depression, perfectionism, self-condemnation etc. Remedy for Rejection The remedy is having our identity in Jesus Christ. Consider the following statements that describe every believer. . [1] http://www.ficm.org/newsite/index.php?command=textwhoamiinchrist

| This is a great post! I love all the scriptures you give. :) |
|
|
| Boy if I ever needed it. Those scriptures are bound for my dashboard, or a good posting place in my house. |
|
|
Dave,
I agree. God's Word is powerful! |
|
|
| The word of God is the only thing that can transform us. It is by the renewing of our minds that we can over come and be obediant to God. For rejection I know and have had to work through and even now the enemy will try and bring back some of the feelings BUT the word reminds me that I am the Lords and He is mine and that settles that! |

Cool Post - Couple of thoughts We so easily get dispondant, negative when we get rejected by others or just in our own minds. These scriptures are way cool but it is our responsibilty to memorize them and to make them our own. When I get dispondant I just look up and everytime it's the same reaction i'm struck with awe of how awesome, big and magnificent my God is and then I realise that no problem that i have can even compare to the sheer almight of God and I hand it all to him and somehow He sorts it. Bless God He deserves your Praises and Blessings |

Great post, Pastor Tim! The way we see ourselves so drastically affects the self we present to others. If we can only learn to value ourselves as precious children of the Creator of the Universe, others will value us as well! |
|
|
Thanks Kathy,
I totally agree |

I believe there is a great number of people, christian & non christian, that are suffering from the rejection sydrome. I know, that I know, that I know, that this kind of blog is very effectual for advancing the Kingdom of God. I went to counseling in the spring, & that was the weapon they gave me. To learn & quote what GOD says about me. Thanks. I gave you a STAR! |

| I have several of these bible verses that you listed to remind me of who I am and whose I am...It matters not what man thinks of us. What matters most is that we belong to God! |

As I get to know you better, I hope to be able to share my pain, sorrow and struggles with you so that you can perhaps pray for them pacifically. |

| Healing DOES come into our lives but the scars will remain. Sometimes we will fall wounding ourselves all over again, ripping the scars open. But just remember, as Jesus has been patiently teaching me, healing WILL come again!!! I am so Glad That Jesus cares for me so much that before I was even a twinkle in my daddy's eyes, He died for me!!! |

| I posted it on my blog at reginawall.blogspot.com. Go ahead, check it out!!! |

You know... it amazes me how Satan fights soooo many with the same things. Any distraction that can divert our attention away from Christ he'll send our way. I know I've faced rejection in many forms and I've recognized myself in many of the descriptions given. I have fallen short in many ways as a direct result of fear of failing and fear of rejection. I'm coming through it, Praise God! I'm learning more and more that my value isn't found in the eyes of ppl but in the Word of God! Many chapters of my life have been written and closed but my book isn't finished. God's plan for me still unfolds in bright sunny days as well as dark "seemingly" lonely hours... but nevertheless I'm a work of art still sitting on the canvas. He's still working on me! Thank you for the reminder that we are not ignorant concerning satan's devices.... he'll use what he can to tear us up and tear us down.... but we are soilders fighting the good fight of faith! |
|
|
KdtW you are so right. God is writing new chapters in our lives. As we apply these truths, we can be assured that God will do a new thing in our life.
I saw on you blog that you attend a Church of God. It is the Cleveland, TN affiliate? |

Pastor Tim Now you truly got me writing my Biography on your blogs but It's an ongoing healing proccess for me it just makes me stronger. Pastor you know the story Genesis 37 : 3
3 Now Jacob* loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day he gave Joseph a special gift—a beautiful robe.* 4 But his brothers hated Joseph because of their father’s partiality. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.
Now I felt this way coming up between me and my sister only I was the oldest and I did not understand why she was treated better than me we had the same parents, she got the best of everythig, yes I felt reject this put a bad wedge between me and my sister for years. Others notice because I was ask by many why I had no answer. so I felt unloved. I never new at the time that favortism was all through the Bible so please tell me Pastor is this where this curse stems from. Now me and my sister is closer than two peas in a pot even though she lives in Brooklyn and I live in Tampa we just gave our past to God, and I for gave my parents. Love covers a mulititued of sin. |
